Added new chapters: Chapter 39 (Finale) and Chapter 40 (Epilogue). The story is finally complete.
Yesterday marked exactly one year since, out of frustration with The Handmaid’s Tale canon ending, I wrote the one-shot You Never Would’ve Chosen Me, where Nick Blaine survived. And then I started wondering... what would his life look like afterward? Who could he meet? Would he ever be able to be happy again?
And even though it took me a year, this story is the answer to all of those questions.
I know this story isn’t perfect, that it may be controversial at times, and that maybe after such a long pause nobody even cares about it anymore... but it holds a special place in my writer’s heart.
Honestly, it’s the longest story I’ve ever written, and even though everything wasn’t magically fixed in the end, I wanted to keep a certain sense of realism in the story, along with the feeling that life doesn’t always wrap everything up as neatly as we might wish. But even so, there is always something worth fighting for and something worth cherishing.
