American Psycho (2011) - Mimi Cabell, Jason Huff American Psycho was created by sending the entirety of Bret Easton Ellis' violent, masochistic and gratuitous novel American Psycho through GMail, one page at a time. We collected the ads that appeared next to each email and used them to annotate the original text, page by page. In printing it as a perfect bound book, we erased the body of Ellis' text and left only chapter titles and constellations of our added footnotes. What remains is American Psycho, told through its chapter titles and annotated relational Google ads.

this book was made by sending the entire text of bret easton ellis' american psycho between two gmail accounts page by page. we saved the relational ads for each page and added them back into the text as footnotes. in total, we collected over 800 relevant ads for the book. the constellations of footnoted ads throughout these pages retell the story of american psycho in absence of the original text. this retelling reveals gmail's unpredictable insensitivity to violence, racism, and sex. it serves as a blurry portrait of an algorithm that exists in our everyday communication simultaneously forming a new portrait of the lead character, patrick bateman.

Jason Huff The Story of Art 2010 E.H. Gombrich, The Story of Art 16th Edition, 1995 9.8” x 7.1” Book

The Story of Art takes E.H. Gombrich’s seminal art history text, which relies heavily on the presentation of images, and reduces the pages of art history to nothing more than broken image link icons. The cover image and every single graphic on the interior has been replaced with the icon. The graphic, synonymous with outdated websites, challenges the so-called canon of art history.
