encroachment by Ed Karjala Photography Via Flickr: Jasper Beach, Machiasport, Maine. An intriguing curved beach over 1/2 mile long, set deep in a cove. It is a classic downeast rocky beach with literal mounds of smooth, polished rocks. Lots of granite, quartz, and (of course) jasper mixed in as well. At first glance, it appears grey -- pick up a few rocks and you will be amazed at the range of color and texture from one rock to the next.
