Floating. Between houses, between people, between cities. Jasper Bloom has always been floating. Between schools, between families, between dreams. Until he arrived in Norfolk, a quaint sleepy town. Perfect for a dreamer. Hungry like a dreamer. 

The orphanage was a place of solace for him. Sixteen years were spent in a shared room, filled with bunk beds that towered to the ceiling. Every night he fell asleep, as the young ones sobbed for the parents they could have had. He dreamed as the older ones accepted their abandonment. An air of melancholy surrounded Jasper, but he had much to give. And he did. He granted wishes in the dreamscape. He crept into nightmares and battled monsters. All whilst unaware of his magical nature. 

The foster care system was nightmarish. A vicious cycle of detachment, abuse, and relocation. Every time Jasper thought he found a home, he was outcasted. They said he was haunting. He was accused of producing himself alongside monstrosities in other’s dreams. Jasper’s magical peculiarity was unfathomable to himself let alone those around him. He didn’t know what he was doing wrong, therefore he lacked the knowledge to stop it. After six homes, he finally landed in Little Fortune, Norfolk, Washington. This family wasn’t any different than the last; a poor hard-working family. They would turn on him like the last. And so to quell his cries of loneliness and abandonment, he turned to drugs.

 Eight months later, Jasper sat in a courtroom. Aged seventeen and a half, his arms were decorated with needle pricks. His eyes were red and his head hung low, as Jennifer Finchley convinced a jury that he had promise and redemption left in him yet. He was more than a displaced individual, and if the good people of Norfolk gave him a chance Jasper Bloom would make something of himself. As the handcuffs came off his wrists, he thanked her for the kindness. Jennifer asked him if he wanted a home. A home, not a house -- a permanent residence with her. However, her offer of food, shelter, and familial love came with conditions. Jasper would have to attend school regularly, later university and earn a degree in law. He would never touch narcotics again either. He readily accepted. Soon after his adoption, Jasper learns of Laura and her untimely death and the magic that surrounds the town. He understands Jennifer’s need to smother him and lets her do it. But her has his own reservations about his new found mother; if she could sacrifice her own daughter, what could stop her from doing the same to him?
