JAWS @ Epic Studios

Supported by Claws and Happyness, JAWS made their Norwich debut on the 3rd March at Epic Studios on the firstnight of their new tour. In what is normally an unfavorable venue (well for me anyway) a surprisingly large crowd filled the strange studio space to see them play new classics from their debut album ‘Be Slowly’.

Both the fact that the boys have upgraded the show whilst remaining the same old band is clear from the get go. A new banner has replaced the old tie-dye backdrop. A disco ball has taken residence in front of the drum kit and there is a complimenting light set up, the band graces the stage in their usual style.

In a way it’s your typical laid back JAWS performance, with Connor (lead vocals/guitar) staring off into the high ceiling and never seemingly quite relaxing, but rather alluding to the attenuation of the thrill of a nervous performance. On stage, it is the others that seem most at home. Eddy (drums) begins in a hat but it’s removed further into the set as he joins us in the swishing of long hair once the crowd gets going. Unlike you might imagine upon listening to them on record, this is a band to dance to and happily mosh away with as they play sunset songs. Alex (guitar) as usual sticks to his side of the stage and bobs around, managing to seem prepared in the most relaxed and comfortable way, a way you wish you could pull off yourself. Between songs Jake (bass) asks the crowd who has bought the album, taking a break from rocking between his front and rear foot as he stands in what can immediately be recognized as the classic bass player stance.

In a performance that is sprinkled with more stage talk than normal for the Brummie band we are informed that they have been in the studio working on new material. Two songs of which we are treated to as “Norwich Exclusives”, the first, ‘Bad Company’. With an overall heavier sound it still manages to hold on to that bliss vibe, which is especially prominent in the chorus. The band are seemingly heading in a darker direction, the kind alluded to on the albums ‘Filth’, which isn’t particularly surprising when you consider that most of the members used to play for heavier bands prior to and during the earlier days of JAWS’ formation back in 2012. During ‘Bad Company’ Connor breaks his guitar strap and tells us that if it were going to happen, it would’ve been to that song, hinting at a lighter sound for the second unnamed track. Sometimes new material can leave a crowd feeling a little awkward and alienated but this isn’t the case as they don’t tread to far from what we know, it also helps that the treading is in a fun direction and one that I dare say a fair amount of fans have been waiting for them to take. 

Given that they are only an album (and an EP) into their career that they already have live classics might come as a surprise to those not in the know, they play most of the tracks off of ‘Be Slowly’ and most of their EP ‘Milkshake’ including ‘Stay In’ which is re-varnished with a slowed intro before a pause and mosh. Their performance style isn’t exactly intensive but they manage to keep the pace going nicely. Reflecting on the wasted effort it requires to leave the stage and saving us the mundanity of an encore in the process, Connor announces that they’re just going to stay put and end the set with ‘Gold’. With the promise of a return to Norwich on a night of many firsts, its clear to all that JAWS can deliver without having to exert much effort at all.
