          “    don’t  try  and  pin  this  on  me,    ”    harry snapped sharply. benched right when they were getting to the good part. warm ups had gone off without a hitch, a little banter, a few insults thrown at each other, nothing overtly negative, in fact, coach had even called it a ‘ healthy competition ’. but the second the mock tourney game had started, team split down the center with both harry and jay on the same side, it was like a lit match to gasoline and now here they each were, grounded to the chair like a couple of kids.    “    if  you’d  just  passed  the  ball  to  me  like  i’d  told  you  to  —    ”

“You look down, Jay. What’s the matter, weren’t able to steal any hats to sell back to their owners this week?” Harry jibed, the sight of the thief enough to send Harry’s pulse racing with agitation. Harry had several flaws that he would gladly admit to (just as he had a couple virtues he’d never confess) and among them was his ability to hold a grudge when his pride was wounded. The fact Jay had turned down the offer to be part of the same crew that he was in was something that Harry couldn’t help but take personally and the chances that he would ever let it go were slim and growing slimmer with each run in he shared with Jay.

      “ let’s talk. ” it’s not a request, she wraps her hand around the once-thief’s elbow and tugs him off to one side with a grip like iron. only once they’re out of earshot of anybody else does she loosen up the grip- and if she’s left bruises, then she can be satisfied with that. 

      “ you’re stealing my master gunner, ” she says, and it’s not a question, just a statement of fact. “ he is, of course, free to do what he wants, whatever he wants, but i want him back in one piece. and if he’s not, there’s not a power that could stop me. not mal, not ben, not the law, nothing would stop me tearing you limb from limb. are we clear? ”
