Walking Down The Hill
Bucky Barnes x Reader
Word Count: 4462
Author’s Note: This is an entry for @bvcks’ 4.2k Writing Challenge! Thank you so much for hosting this wonderful challenge dear, I hope you love this fic! My prompt was: “I have so much I want to say to you but right now I just need to feel you.” Also, I’ve had a long week and I’m needy so leaving me love would be much appreciated. So please comment and tell me what you loved!
Summary: The Avengers have to investigate and dismantle a HYDRA base. How does Bucky deal with his first HYDRA occurrence since his time sent in Wakanda healing from the damage they inflicted. Can the reader handle a fight against HYDRA?
Warnings: A bit angsty, Bucky being a bit of jerk for a quick minute, HYDRA doing HYDRA things, injury, fluffiness at the end. A couple of swears. potential typo and grammatical errors because I did not go through and edit this and did not have a beta. It be like that sometimes.
Bucky felt as if there were a vise wrapped around his chest. Getting impossibly tighter and if he didn’t know any better he thought his ribs would break. He felt as if the blood in his veins and suddenly turned to ice, yet he felt himself getting sweaty like when Steve and him workout. He wasn’t able to pull himself out of it until he felt a small hand on his knee. A delicate finger tracing various patterns, the most calming a figure eight pattern that somehow calmed his breathing. After a moment or two, Tony’s voice came back into focus instead of just being background noise.
“No one goes it alone. Do everything you can to stay with your partner. Barnes I want you with-”
“Y/L/N is with me.” Bucky spoke up. His tone leaving no room for argument. Tony looked Bucky in the eyes and nodded before continuing.
“Barnes, Y/L/N, and Thor you three to work together sweeping the second level, so Rogers and Romanoff can get to the third level and take down the boss and get any data from this headquarters that may lead us to any others. Barton and Wilson I want you two ready on the quinjet ready to take off if necessary, but you two can also keep watch on the outside for any hydra members trying to escape. Vision, Maximoff and I will sweep the first floor and try to keep anyone from escaping the base. Over the next week I want everyone to not only train for what we’re up against, but I also want us to memorize the blue prints that we have of the base. It probably won’t be exact, but something is better than nothing.” Tony ended his speech looking at everyone, making sure everyone was all on the same page before dismissing everyone. You stood up and turned to face Bucky. You could feel the anxiety rolling off of him in waves.
While he had spent a considerable amount of time in Wakanda healing, facing HYDRA had him on edge, and you couldn’t blame him a bit for it. Bucky continued to sit unflinchingly in his seat while the others left the room. Steve look towards you with a question in his eyes and you shook your head letting him know you had it handled and to go on ahead. Once everyone left the room you moved slowly in front of Bucky before sitting on his lap, you looked into his eyes while one hand rested on his shoulder and the other carded through his hair, something you knew he found comforting. Bucky looked into your eyes and you could see there were filled with worry and something else.
“Wanna talk about it, or do you want a distraction?” You asked him softly. Giving him the power to decide was a comfort he needed, but it also guided you on how to help him best. Sometimes Bucky would want to talk about it, sometimes he would want to be distracted for a bit before he would open up.
“I’m gonna hit the gym before going to bed, don’t wait up.” Bucky said in a soft, but gruff voice. He lifted you with ease from his lap and was out the door in a blink of an eye. Yes, sometimes Bucky would want to talk about it, and other times he would want a distraction before he’d talk about what was actually bothering him, but he had never just shut you out before. You took a deep breath before wearily getting up and heading to your shared room with Bucky, unsure of whether you should just head to your own room for the night. You walked to Bucky’s door, stopping for a second before heading in. You knew you would get a restless sleep in your own bed, if you got any at all. You hoped that once morning came things would be back to normal.
You reached across the bed as you opened your eyes and deflated a bit when you noticed Bucky wasn’t there. His side of the bed felt as cold as his metal arm. Not wanting to, but doing it anyway, you get up and got dressed for the first day of training. You walk down to the gym and you spot Bucky laying into a punching bag with Steve right beside him. Natasha and Wanda were in the ring training with Vision watching from the sidelines. Sam was standing against the wall taking a long drink from his water bottle. You walked up to him and began your stretches.
“On your left.” You said with a cheeky smile.
“Oh hell no, not you too!”
“Sorry, Sammy. I just couldn’t resist!”
“Oh, no you’re gonna get it!” Sam said as he pushed himself away from the wall. You let out a squeal and took off running across the gym. You knew Sam hated your nickname for him, but he also knew that you only used it to get a rise out of him. It didn’t take long before Sam was tackling you down to a sparring mat.
“On your left, Y/L/N!” Sam shouted as he tackled you. His fingers finding your sides to tickle you as his revenge. You were laughing so hard you were crying.
“Are you two done?” Shouted the irritated voice of your boyfriend. Silence filled the room after. Usually he’d be one to join in on the antics between you and Sam. Everyone knew that you were the little sister Sam never had, and he was the older brother you never had. Which was exactly why everyone was looking between the two of you and Bucky with looks of astonishment and confusion clear as day on their faces.
“My bad.” Sam said in apology while standing up. He offered a hand to you to help you up, and if he hadn’t you probably would have been stuck to the floor in shock. Sam looked at you questioningly and with a shake of your head you walked away and head towards the treadmill for your warm-up run. You put your headphones in and blasted your gym playlist during your ten mile run. Over an hour later you’re pulling out your headphones and getting off the treadmill, noting that your time had improved you gave yourself a mental high-five. You looked around the gym and noticed that most of your teammates had finished training for the morning. The only one left was Bucky who was stretching in the ring.
“C’mon, doll. I wanna show you some moves.” Bucky’s tone wasn’t the usual warm one that he used with you, it seemed tired and on edge, but the use of your nickname that uses for you and only you gave you a bit of reassurance that things were okay between you despite how he’d been acting since yesterday. You got into the ring and stretched a little to make sure you were ready for what Bucky wanted to throw at you. Bucky taught you some new moves, and pinned you down every single time. By the time he called it quits for the day you were frustrated, and he seemed no better. Bucky stalked off to the showers while you took a minute to sit on the floor of the ring. This was going to be a long week, and you already couldn’t wait for it to be over.
As each day passed with the same routine you couldn’t help but feel more and more frustrated. What was worse was that you could tell Bucky felt the same way, and even though he didn’t say he was disappointed in your inability to take him down, or at least not get yourself pinned, you could tell it was there. It wasn’t until the day before the mission when you were training with Bucky again that things finally came to a head and exploded between the two of you.
“C’mon, Y/N! You’re gonna get yourself killed out there if you don’t get a grip on this!” Bucky yelled at you. The venom and annoyance in his tone didn’t go unmissed, and that was your final straw. You stared up at Bucky for a second before standing up and walking out of the ring. You heard Bucky let out a sigh behind you and you knew that he knew you were pissed and he had gone too far.
“Y/N, wait. Wait up!” Bucky jumped out of the ring and caught up with you before you could push open the gym doors. You spun around the second you felt his fingers graze your arm.
“Ya know, you’ve been a real ass all week Bucky, and I’ve kept my mouth shut about it because I know this has to be one of the hardest things you’ve ever done, but that doesn’t give you the right to not only push me away, but also act like a complete ass. If you’re so sure that I’m gonna get myself killed tomorrow then go to Tony and request a new partner and get me suspended from the mission. Otherwise quit the shit and admit that you’re problem isn’t with me, but with the fact that you’re scared shitless about tomorrow.” You yelled at Bucky with tears coming down your face. You swiftly turned back around and headed to your room to shower this god awful day away. You also wanted to wash away the guilt that overcame you from yelling at Bucky. He looked like a kicked puppy by the time you were done yelling at him and you felt terrible about it. You also knew that you told him the cold, hard truth. You just hoped that Bucky could forgive you and things would go back to normal after tomorrow.
You walked into your room, locked your door behind you, and told FRIDAY that you didn’t want any visitors or disturbances until you had to get up for the mission in the morning. You honestly didn’t know at this point if Bucky would try talking to you or not, but you just wanted to shower and attempt sleeping. You stripped your sweaty clothes on the way to your en suite bathroom letting the clothes fall to the floor as you took them off. You just didn’t care and couldn’t be bothered. You were emotionally, mentally, and physically drained. You stepped under the steaming shower and got to work scrubbing the day away. Tears continued to fall down your face and mingle with the stream of water from the shower. You prayed that tomorrow would go smoothly and quickly, but you had a bad feeling in your bones that tomorrow wasn’t going to go well.
Bucky paced outside of your bedroom door in the hallway. He felt like an ass. He knew that if his ma could see him right now she would be giving him an earful about how she raised him better. He tried opening your door to find it locked, it took him a minute to fight through the lump that was constricting his voice in his throat to ask FRIDAY to open the door. The answer the automated AI gave him sent his heart plummeting into his stomach. He knew as soon as the words left his mouth in the ring that he had gone too far. He did exactly what he didn’t want to and took his fear and anxiety out on you. Bucky stopped pacing and leaned against the wall beside your door before sliding down it, hoping that he could catch you before you would head to dinner. Bucky closed his eyes and waited.
After your shower you sluggishly walked around the room grabbing pajamas before curling up in your bed. Your stomach growled with hunger for dinner, but you made no effort to move. You were thoroughly exhausted and decided to just eat a bigger breakfast when morning came. You closed your eyes and drifted off to sleep, but not before swearing you could hear Bucky’s soft snores.
Bucky woke in the morning with a stiff neck. His entire body was stiff if he was being honest. It was also a little early for him to be up. He had a whole hour before he had to be up according to the AI when he asked the time. He realized that he had either slept through you going to dinner, or you never went. Bucky knew that when you were drained or stressed you wouldn’t exactly stay up on your self care like you should. Bucky got up and walked to his room to shower and get ready for the mission. He hoped the feeling of dread and guilt would wash away in the shower like a baptism.
You woke an hour early when you heard someone out in the hallway. You elected to ignore figuring it was just Steve getting up for a quick run and continued to lie in bed. You stayed there until you could no longer ignore the rumbling of your stomach and got up and made your way to the kitchen. You made yourself a bowl of oatmeal with a side of fruit, hoping it would settle your nervous stomach. You rinsed your bowl when you were done before putting it in the dishwasher, the last thing you needed was to upset Tony before the mission.
You made your way to your room and began getting dressed for the mission. You pulled on your under armor wear before pulling on your skin tight, black leather suit. You pulled out all of your various knives, guns, a collapsible baton, throwing stars, holsters, and anything else you could strap to your body. You pulled the thigh holsters over your legs before pulling on your combat boots and lacing them up. Strapping everything you could to your body you took a could of deep breaths in front of the mirror as you checked yourself over to make sure everything was in place and you weren’t forgetting anything. You nearly jumped out of your skin when you heard a knock at your door.
“Everyone’s heading to the quinjet, just so you know.” Bucky’s voice drifted through your door. He sounded rough. Not rough in the way that he had been all week, but in the way that meant he realized how he had been acting and honestly felt bad about it. It sent a pang in your chest as you remembered your fight. You headed towards your door and opened it. Bucky’s head was bowed, his hair falling like a curtain and hiding his face. You pulled a spare hair tie off your wrist and handed it to him before tilting your head to let Bucky know to start heading towards the quinjet.
You two joined the others inside the quinjet, the walkway closing behind you. You headed to your seat and buckled yourself in as Tony stood in the front and began going over the plan one last time. Bucky sat down beside you in his regular seat. His fingertips grazed yours. You looked over to him and saw a shy smile on his face. Bucky could be a man of few words sometimes and you knew this was his way of asking if his touch was okay. You turned your hand so your palm was facing up. Bucky looked up to you, a little shocked that you were open to him after how he acted this week. He tentatively laced his hand with yours and gave him hand a gentle squeeze before redirecting your focus back to Tony.
“Everyone got the plan down?”
“Tony, I think even the plant in the office has the plan down at this point.” Natasha sasses back to Tony causing him to roll his eyes.
Tony then launched into the back up plans, what to do if you get separated, what to expect at this particular base and from these particular HYDRA agents, and then with the last fifteen minutes before the jet would land he went over the plan. You couldn’t blame Tony though, after everything with the Accords you knew he was just being thorough and wanting to have every possible outcome covered so this would go off without a hitch. You still had a bad feeling about today and it was getting worse the closer you got to the base. You wanted to make up with Bucky But as soon as Tony was done going over everything the quinjet landed and everyone was running out to blitz attack the base and its occupants.
You followed behind Bucky trying to get to the second floor so Steve and Nat could get to the third. There were more HYDRA agents than you all had expected and you and Bucky were fighting back to back.
“Barton, Wilson you two aren’t too busy up there, we could sure use your help down here.” Tony spoke through the coms. You wanted to let him know that you and Bucky weren’t fairing too much better down here but you could never get a breath to speak. As soon as you and Bucky thought that maybe you had a handle on the second floor a swarm of agents came out of nowhere. One in particular came at your left splitting you from Bucky. Bucky noticed and kept trying to make his way back to you but he had five agents against him, and you had three against you. The three you were fighting kept trying to get you backed against the wall. You fought for every inch you could to get closer to Bucky, but they kept coming at you and you were starting to get sloppy. Your guns were out of ammo and you were alternating between hand to hand combat and your knife. It wasn’t until you heard a shot that you stopped. Hot, firey pain erupted in your abdomen. You saw the butt of a gun and heard Bucky’s scream before everything went black.
Bucky had never felt so scared in his entire life. He could hear Steve in his com asking what happened, but Bucky’s focus was on you. With strength Bucky didn’t even know he had he took down the five agents one after another leaving them a bloody mess on the floor. He took the gun from one of the agents and fired it at the three surrounding you killing them instantly. Bucky rushed forward reaching for you. He felt you neck looking for a pulse and nearly cried in relief when he felt your heartbeat. Bucky started putting pressure on the gunshot wound which caused you to groan but he knew that you were nowhere near conscious.
He didn’t know if it was seconds, minutes, or hours later since time seemed to stand still as he prayed that you would make it out of here. You didn’t deserve to die like this. You didn’t deserve to die at all. All he could think about was how he had pushed you away this week and the harsh things he said. Things he never apologized for. He nearly jumped out of his skin when he felt a hand at his shoulder. That’s when he realized the team had made their way to them. He nearly sucker punched Steve when he tried to pull him away.
“I know, Buck. But you gotta let her go so Thor can get her to the tower so Cho can fix her.” Steve repeated this to Bucky four times before it sank in and he stopped resisting him. Thor gently picked you up before quickly running up the stairs and outside before lowering your legs to the ground so he could hold you with one arm and swing his hammer with the other. Using the quickest form of transport to get you the help you needed.
With the HYDRA agents dead or detained and the data on a flash drive the group made their way somberly to the quinjet. Bucky moved like a zombie to his seat and stared at the spot you had been sitting in on the way there. The hour and a half back to the tower was the longest flight of Bucky’s life. He felt like he would drown in the guilt that was overcoming him. As soon as the quinjet landed he was running to Dr Cho. When Bucky reaches the med bay his heart stops. He doesn’t see you anywhere and his mind starts to spiral to the worst case scenario. It isn’t until Dr Cho is in front of him with her hands on his shoulders that he notices she had been speaking to him.
“Sergeant Barnes, I’m afraid if you don’t calm down a little bit for me I may need to give you something to calm you down for you.” Bucky shakes his head to as if physically moving will get him to focus.
“Where is she?” Are the only words he’s able to croak out. The doctor looks at him wearily for a few seconds before conceding and telling him again.
“I finished her treatment in the regeneration cradle about 20 minutes ago. She’s resting in your room.” Bucky nodded to the doctor and whispered a quiet thanks before taking off for his room. He couldn’t believe you were okay until he saw it with his own eyes. Until he could replace the image burned into his retinas of your crumpled form with blood blossoming around your middle. When he reached his door he hesitated. He worried that this was some dream. The mount of blood that you had lost left him disbelieving that you would make it. He took a deep breath before opening the door.
The sight of you in his bed took his breath away. It always did, but this time outweighed them all. Bucky moved slowly towards his bed. He stood over you watching the soft rise and fall of your chest as you slept. Bucky didn’t want to tear his eyes from for a second, but when he reached out to touch you he noticed he still had your blood staining his hands. He quickly walked into the bathroom tearing off his gear as quickly as possible and took the quickest and yet most thorough shower of his life. When he walked back into his room after drying off he reached for his pajama bottoms so when he held you he could feel as much of you against his skin as possible.
He carefully climbed into the bed and gingerly moved you to your side so your back was against his chest. He peppered kisses against your shoulder while his flesh hand traced patterns on your arm. Bucky began humming a song you had showed him months ago. You had told him that you thought of him when you heard it and ever since it always made him think of you. It wasn’t long before he felt you start to wake. As much as he knew you needed to rest, and sleep was a big part of that, he was selfishly happy to see your eyes open.
“Hey you.” Your voice cracked as you whispered, but you knew Bucky still heard it.
“Hey.”
“I uhm, I guess you were right. I nearly got myself killed. I guess I couldn’t handle that mission or HYDRA after all.” You whispered out while staring at the wall. You felt terrible about yelling at Bucky before, but it was even worse now. He had been right, and you nearly got yourself killed because you were frustrated with his actions. You winced as Bucky went to guide you to turn over. Even though the regeneration cradle healed you up just fine, you were still a little sore and tender. Eventually you turned over to face Bucky though, and what you saw broke your heart. His eyes were bloodshot and tears were streaming down his face. You reached out a hand to wipe them away causing Bucky to let out the softest gasp.
He hadn’t even realized he was crying until you wiped away his tears. His heart broke at your words of self blame. It wasn’t your fault and he needed you to believe that.
“Hey, I was a royal jerk this past week, and what I said was way out of line. I took out my fear and anxiety on you. But there wasn’t a doubt in my mind for a second that you could handle the mission or HYDRA. I was just scared because I know what they’re capable of. It terrified the absolute living shit out of me that they would be anywhere near you where they could potentially hurt you. My fear got the best of me, and that’s no excuse for what I said or my actions. And I hope to God that you forgive me, doll. Because I don’t know what I would do without you. But never doubt my confidence in your abilities. Even when I’m being an ass. I just couldn’t handle it if they did anything to you. After experiencing it first hand, I couldn’t live with myself if they got to you and hurt you, or god forbid killed you. I was scared that they would somehow find a way to initiate the brainwashing they did and make me hurt you, or if they separated us like they did. I’m scared to death about not being able to protect you from them-”
“Hey, hey, I’m okay. I’m right here, and I’m okay, thanks to you I might add.” You cut Bucky off from talking when you noticed he was hyperventilating, you knew if you didn’t get him to calm down he would go into a full blown panic attack. You tilted your head and brushed your lips against his. Your kisses were slow and soft, and you didn’t stop until Bucky’s breathing was nearly even with your own.
“I have so much I want to say to you but right now I just need to feel you.” Bucky whispered against your lips before kissing you. You nodded your head after the kiss broke.
“Sing me to sleep?” You asked softly.
“Yeah, c’mere.” Bucky laid on his back and draped a spare blanket over his metal arm so it wouldn’t be so hard or cold if your head drifted from his chest. Bucky began singing softly as you both drifted off to sleep, his deep voice lulling you into the best sleep you’ve had in a while.
Walking down this hill tonight
I had a thought all to myself
As I contemplated the moonlight
We've got it all, we've got it made
I don't know how I got here
But I'm holding on for the crash

Don’t Do This
I have the flu, everything hurts and my brain is full of fuzz. how do write endings?
Based on the musical/Podcast ‘36 Questions’
“Y/N, and you are?” You had your hand held out to him waiting for him to shake it for what seemed like hours.
Panic. Sheer unadulterated panic. Blood rushing and thudding in his ears so loud he could barely hear the music playing from the stage. He didn't want to shake your hand with his left one afraid it would scare you away and ruin anything with you before it even started. He also didn't want you to know his real name afraid that, that would also scare you off.
“Steve, my name is Steve.” He reached out with his right hand shoving the left far into his pants pocket.
That was the beginning of the end for Bucky. The first of many little white lies that would consume him. They started off small at first just little things like what he did for a living and his birthday. There was some part of his brain that warned him not to over do it, not to bite off more than he could chew. But he was stubborn.
“So what's with the arm?” He knew eventually it would come up after a while. It was becoming increasingly more difficult to hide the metal appendage with summer just around the corner and long sleeve jackets and hoodies were starting to make him boil. But he hadn't planned on it happening so out of the blue. Sure it was date number five, but he hadn't thought of any kind of excuse yet.
“It's a prosthetic,” He could tell you half truths until he was blue in the face, “I was in the army,” no matter how honest he wanted to be with you he couldn't, he couldn't tell you who he was or what he had been through scared, terrified It would drive you away “and it got blown off.” So he never did.
“Steve, I'm so sorry I asked.” You looked genuinely distressed and sad about it and he felt terrible when he heard you apologizing.
Over the course of 5 years his little white lies had manifested themselves into one giant black demon that sat on his chest and every time he took a breath he would feel it press harder into his chest until one day he couldn't breathe anymore and it all exploded in his face like the worst firecracker in the world.
He hadn't expected it to go this far. For him to be married to you, to know you so completely while you had no idea who the hell he was. You didn't know his name, you didn't know how old he was, you didn't know some of the most important things about his life. Where as he knew every little thing about you, he knew your morning routine like the back of his hand, he knew your birthday and half birthday. It was beyond painful to see you smile as big and bright as you did when you found out a new fake thing about him.
When he woke up, on the morning of arguable the worst day of his life, with you wrapped around him, he hadn't expected anything to be weird about this day. When he sat on the bed and watched you get all dolled up for the wedding you would be going to, he didn't think it would be the last time he got to watch you laugh at him struggling to tie his tie. There was nothing out of the ordinary about this morning that would lead him to believe this day would be a living nightmare.
He was never really sure when the world he so meticulously crafted with his lies would come crashing down, so he treated every second he had with you like it was the last because it very well could be. He danced with you that night like he did whenever you went out as slow and as long as he pleased and he held you as close to himself as he could.
“You look like heaven you know that doll?” He whispered as he moved you across the dance floor in smooth strides.
“You say that all the time yo-.” You were cut off by the sound of a throat being cleared.
“Sergeant James Buchanan Barnes,” A man in an all black pressed suit says as he walks up to the two of you and Bucky can feel his heart stop beating. “I don't mean to interrupt your night but I had to say hello.”
His chest hurts with the ache of realization when he hears his name. There are a few seconds where he isn’t sure what he should do. If he should punch this seemingly innocent man right in the face too shut him up or if he should break down and come clean.
“Hello, we really have to be heading out now.” Bucky grabs your hand and goes to move away from the man as fast as he can, but the man isn’t having any of that as he keeps talking.
“My name is Jacob and I've dedicated the last 10 years of my life to your story.” He stretches out his hand for a handshake and he has the smile of the happiest man on the planet glued onto his face. Bucky wants to scream at him tell him to piss off somewhere, but that would be weird to just yell at a stranger for no real reason.
“Pardon?” Your voice rings in Bucky’s ears and its full of worry and he hates this man. Hates him more then he hates HYDRA and Red skull. When he hears your voice he can only picture the look of confusion on your face as you try to put what this man is saying together. He wants to grab you and lead you past him and out the door so he can start explaining before this guy opens his mouth again, but you pull away from him and he's struck with an instant feeling of dread.
“Ma’am that is one Sergeant James Buchanan Barnes born March 10, 1917 best friend to Steven Grant Rogers, Captain America, war hero who was presumably killed in action after he fell of a speeding train.” Bucky knows his own damn story hes lived it, he has no outward reaction to what this man has said. But when he looks at you he knows that you can’t even begin to process what the hell hes saying.
“We really have to be leaving now.” Bucky grabs your hand and moves as briskly as he can out of the huge front doors.
“Is what he said true St- James?” There was a time where he dreamed of you calling him by his real name, but it didn’t sound broken and hurt like that. In his dreams it was sung with high praise and whispered at the most intimate of times.
“It's not like that.” He wanted to explain it all but where did he begin? Where would be the point where you didn't trust that he was telling the truth? Would you even believe him at this point?
”Is it true?” You're almost yelling at this point and he wants to hug you and kiss you to calm you down but he can’t move, his legs just wont bring him closer to you.
“IS IT TRUE!?” There was no were to begin in his confession. He lied to you day in and day out for years about every single thing he had ever said to you. He didn't want to lie to you again though he wanted to be honest and up front with you for once in is life, but he couldn't bring himself to say the one word that would make things sort of right. His mouth opened and shut as he tried to think of how he could explain away what he had done.
‘Yes’,it was hands down the easiest way to explain it, but he just couldn’t fucking say yes. So he didn’t. Instead he looked away from you and nodded his head,
He had always thought that finally opening up to you about the real him would be easy. He wold start by telling you about the pain he had been through, telling you about all the torture and the fighting. Then he would tell you about the people he hurt, the innocent lives he had taken, but now that he was faced with the opportunity to tell you everything he couldn’t bring himself to do it.
“So was everything ...?” You can’t bring yourself to finish the sentence so you motion between the two of you and Bucky notices and he feels like the worst person in the world.
“I was scared.” He still hasn’t looked up at you just yet, finding the sleeve of his jacket much more interesting. “I just wanted to know you at first, but it just went too far.”
“So your name isn’t really Steve?” Its said with such sadness he physically flinches away from you.
“No,” If he can’t tell you the full story right now, far too in shock about the whole damn night, the least he could do was look you in the eye. So he takes a deep breath and looks up at you before he finishes his sentence, “Its not.”
“Well that makes this easier right,” There’s a bitter laugh that comes from you that has him making his way over to you. It doesn’t register completely in his brain that you're moving your hands against each other until your talking again, “We aren’t really married then so no need fo-”
“Don’t do this.” He doesn't give you the opportunity to get the ring all the way off your finger before he's grabbing your hand and trying to slide it back on. “I'll tell you everything. Just, please let's go talk somewhere in private.I’ll tell you everything, Y/N. Please.”
“I can’t do that right now. I'm just gonna go.”

A/N: I made up a birthday and an age, I hope that’s okay! And also I don’t really have any knowledge of the Avatar, I just used what I remember from the show!
You woke up on the cold, hard floor and your face was throbbing. You groaned as you got up, slinging your arm across your stomach, coughing up the air that you missed out on breathing. The room was fairly dark and the walls were splattered with dry blood from the past victims this room had held. You got up to walk to the door but you were suddenly thrown back to the floor by an invisible force. You rolled on the floor, clutching your already weak body and did the only thing you could think of. Your hand slammed to the ground but it didn’t do what you wanted it to do. With your eyebrows furrowed, you tried to do it again but nothing.
“Oh, your powers won’t work there, sweetheart.” There was a voice through the speakers above you, the accent was thick,
“Who are you?” You coughed, “What do you want?”
“We’ll get what we want from you, we’re just prepping.”
Suddenly, six men came into the room and pulled a lever near the door. They were speaking Russian which you could only understand a little bit. They grabbed you as you kicked and screamed for them to let you go.
“Получить ее в кресло и убедитесь, что она плотно завернутые в”
‘Chair? Wrap me in?’ you wondered, “Get the fuck off of me! Help!” The men pushed you into a chair and began to strap you in. Most of them left to get something and one officer, well you assumed he was, was left. His large hand covered yours as he strapped your right hand in. Next to the chair was a table with some cleansed and shiny surgical utensils. Also on the table was a cup of water. You smirked as he looked down, strapping you in, you pointed your strapped fingers at the cup and the water came to you and wrapped around your fingers. As the man looks up, he notices what you’ve done, his eyes widen as you throw the ice claws to him and they hit his head and his eyes. Quickly unfastening yourself, you see the other officers come in and try and surround you but you know exactly what to do. Your eyes begin to flash blue and your hands capture the air, blasting the officers with your invisible force. You see a man with a metal arm in front of you and before you could throw the air ball at him, he stops you.
“I’m not here to hurt you,” he said softly, panting, American?, you identified his accent, “but we need to go, now!” You ran towards him and as you turned to the end of the hallway, there were seven different agents on your trail so you stopped in your tracks and put your hands on the ground. The ground began to shake, your eyes were blowing blue again, and you watched mercilessly as the ground swallowed and imprisoned the men into its core.
“Now, we can go.” You say running past him, into the door that showed some light.
You entered a large jet and inside were people in blue suits, talking through ear pieces. One computer even had a view of earth from space. It amazed you. Beside you walked the man with a metal arm. You were about to thank him before a tall, broad man with blonde hair and blue eyes stopped him in his tracks.
“Good job, Bucky, I’m proud of you man.” he pats the man he calls Bucky on the shoulder, “You’ve proved to everyone that you can go on your own missions.”
“Thanks, Steve.” Bucky replies, giving Steve a small smile, “Have you seen Dr Banner around by any chance?”
“He should be in his lab, he might be with Tony.” Steve walks away with a wave.
“Where are you taking me?” you stop in your tracks, readying yourself for any type of danger,
“Just relax, I’m taking you to see a doctor for the number you’ve taken on your face.”
“How do I know you’re not gonna hurt me?” he turns to you,
“Because if I wanted to hurt you, I would’ve left you there.” He sighs and looks around the room,
“But you didn’t.”
“But I.. Didn’t.” he began to walk and you cautiously followed behind,
“So what are you, Bucky?” you asked curiously,
“What?”
“Like the terminator or something?”
“The what?”
“The terminator? You know? Arnie and he’s like a cyborg sent to-” an older man with brown hair walks out of a glass covered room, “Holy shit, is that Iron Man?”
“You talkin’ ‘bout the Terminator, kid?” Tony asks you, you nod at him, starstruck, “What’s up? You’ve never seen a guy with a nitinol hand? Look at that guy, he’s got a metal arm.”
“N-no but holy shit, you’re Iron Man!”
“And you’re an Avatar.” your eyebrows furrowed,
“How did you-”
“Oh we saw what you did to the HYDRA Agents.”
“Am I being arrested?” your eyes began to glow but Bucky calms you,
“No but we do need you to see Dr Banner, so Tony if you’ll excuse us, we’re gonna get you checked.” Bucky leads you towards Dr Banner’s table and sits you down, Bucky sits near you,
“We’re gonna start off with some basic knowledge just to see if everything’s alright up there.” He smiles softly, “What’s your name?”
“Y/N Y/L/N.”
“Age and date of birth.”
“Seventeen and I was born on the eighth of October, 1999.”
“Where are you from?”
“Everywhere.” You laugh but Dr Banner looks at you seriously, “Sorry, I don’t know where I’m from, I just travel… a lot.”
“Okay, where did you last reside?”
“Well before I was taken here, I lived in an apartment in Miami.”
“You’re seventeen?”
“Well uh… an abandoned apartment.” Bucky swallows thickly and bows his head,
“Why?” he asks, you look at Bucky, his eyes full of concern,
“Cause my parents didn’t want me.” You say sternly, you sigh and look away, jumping off of the table, Bruce leaves you both to grab more medical supplies,
“You could stay here, use your powers for good?
“Bucky, I can’t,” you shake your head at his suggestion, “I just-”
“Why not? You can have a family here! We could be your family! We would never-” you roll your eyes and scoff,
“Never what!? Leave me? Abandon me?! I don’t care! I am not going through this again, I- I,” you take a deep breath as you hear your voice crack, “I won’t let myself.” You whisper. Bucky grabs you and pulls you into a tight hug. He didn’t know why he felt like this towards you, like he wanted to keep you as close as possible. He felt the need to protect you at all costs. You sobbed into his chest and you realised the comfort you were feeling and pulled away as quickly as you could. Bruce entered the room with the sight of you two, you wiped away your tears and sighed deeply, “Look, I’m obviously fine, I need to go.”
You walked off as fast as you could because this is what you always did, you ran away from your problems and if something good came along, like this looked like it was supposed to be, you ran even faster. If you were being honest, you wanted to be loved, you wanted to feel loved but it was so hard to trust people, especially because some people knew who you were and what you could do. You didn’t know if they were genuinely interested in giving their time and effort into you or going to use you for what you could do. You heard quick footsteps behind you, indicating someone was running your way. You began to walk away even faster.
“Y/N! Y/N wait!” It was Bucky. You turned around as he halted to a stop right in front of you.
“What?”
“Where are you going?”
“Why?” you ask, slamming your hands down on your thighs in defeat, “You want me to stay?! Why should I stay? This place… I won’t fit in here! I don’t fucking need you! I’ve been alone and I can fig-”
“You’ll fit in more than you assume, Y/N! Stay and we’ll train you to be the fighter you’re supposed to be,” he lost his breath trying to explain to you and panted as he started his next line, “I don’t know why I feel like I need to protect you but I will, I can be your family!”
“I don’t even know you!”
“Then we’ll try!”
“Why do I have this feeling?” you exhale and drop your head, only to pick it back up,
“Like I trust you.” you both say at the same time.
“Let me be your family for now, Y/N a-and I’ll help you build a whole family with everyone else.” He pulls you in to hug you. It takes a moment before you nod your head.
“I was an only child.” you admit,
“And I’ve always wanted another little sister, isn’t it just perfect?” he gives you a smile and you return it, you mouth a thank you as he swings cold arm around your shoulders, leading you back to the infirmary, quickly filling you in about his little sister, Rebecca.

Gummi Bears
AN: Hey! I felt bad for being so pissed off when I posted 'The Winning Team' so have this absolute sweetness i wrote in like half a day
Summary: Bucky is a THIEF!!
“Steve!” You yelled as you looked through the freezer for your candy.
“What?” He asked back at you from the couch in his room. He was watching a movie with Bucky and you yelling was distracting them both from the well choreographed fight scene on Steve's TV screen.
“Where the hell are my Gummi Bears?!” You put them in the freezer as soon as you got home so they could be nice and cold by the time you were ready to lay in bed and watch your favorite TV show. But they were fucking gone!
“How in the world would I know where your candy is?! Does that even sound a little logical to you?!”
“They were in the freezer next to the ice cream and now they're gone. Did you take them?” If he took them you wouldn't be that mad, but if he was lying about it you'd be damn furious.
“No I didn't take them. Why would I take them?” He just really wanted to watch this movie and the more you bugged him the more annoyed he became.
“You drank my strawberry soda last night! Or have you already forgotten?” You had been saving that strawberry soda all day to go with the pizza you would be having for dinner. It was gonna be perfect with your dinner.
“No I haven't forgotten.” He sighed, he got chewed out by your dad that night about taking your soda and he still wasn't truly over that.
“So why wouldn't you eat my candy today?” You had taken just about everything out of the freezer looking for them they couldn't have just vanished like that.
“I said sorry about that by the way, and for the last time no I didn't take your candy.”
Bucky sat stone still as he listened to the two of you bicker back and forth. A part of him admired your sibling-ship. Even though the Rogers had adopted you, you had grown up knowing them and treating them just like you had been born into the family and it was very evident in the way you talked to them. Just like he talked to his own parents with love and adoration, but more specifically the way you talked to Steve the same way Rebecca talked to him. You could go from being at each other throats to sharing laughs and inside jokes in just seconds.
The Rogers had adopted you when you were 2 Steve was 3 and Bucky was 4. Growing up Bucky didn't have any particularly fond feelings for you. You were just Steve's little sister who would bring them juice and Rice Krispy treats when they played outside. Sometimes you would trip and fall over and cry and he would offer a sympathetic hug to get you to stop. Every single time it worked like magic and your parents would always laugh and take photos. But for the most part growing up you were just an attachment to Steve much the same as Rebecca was to him.
Somewhere in middle school is when a flip had been switched. You had gotten your first 'boyfriend’ in 6th grade, a friend of Bucky and Steve's, and Bucky hated his guts. Hated the way he would carry your books to class, hated the way he would walk home holding your hand, hated the way he would give you suckers everyday, Hated. Him. It wasn't put into perspective until he had caught you guys kissing behind a school building. He was pulling they guy off you in seconds.
“We're leaving Y/N.” He shouted as he pulled you to walk with him.
“Why? I'm waiting for Steve.” You tugged your arm to break free of him but couldn't.
“Because I said so. Let's go.” He pulled you more and you stumbled trying to keep your balance.
“No, I wanna stay.” His grip was tight and you couldn't get out of.
“I said we’re leaving, or should I tell your parents you were kissing your boyfriend?”
“That's not fair Buck! You didn't say anything when Rebecca kissed her boyfriend!”
“That's different you aren't Rebecca. Let's go.”
“I hate you Buck..” When you tugged one last time his grip had loosened significantly and you made a break for it to run home.
He was so jealous back then and it was so embarrassing to think about how he acted then. But it was even more embarrassing to think about how he never apologized to you for ruining that moment for you. That giant green monster had lead him to do something so incredibly stupid and had also lead him to hearing the words that had been his first heart break.
You had always had a crush on Bucky. Your parents would tell you stories about how you often would run up to him damnedest and Steve played basketball and hug his legs before your cheeks got hot and you ran away. There was even video evidence of your crush on him from a barbecue. There had been some dance song playing you couldn't be bothered to remember the name of even though you’d seen the video hundreds of times. The video was just under 3 minutes long and it started with you crying your eyes out while you sat on bench in your pretty purple and white dress. Who knew why you were crying. Your family was absolutely no help in telling you what made you so upset with their jokes. Your mom had told you it was because you dropped your hot dog. Your dad would joke that you were crying because you didn't get to jump in the bounce house. Steve said it was because Bucky had been dancing with one of the other kids that your parents had invited to the party. It was kind of annoying how much you believed Steve.
The next thing that happens after you had presumably been crying for 5 complete minutes is Bucky running over to sit next to you on the bench. Almost immediately your crying turns to adorable snotty sniffles as he pulls you into a side hug and places a gentle kiss on your forehead before he pulls you up and towards where the giant booming speakers are to dance.
Your crush on Bucky progressively escalated the older you got. So much so that the only reason you dated your first real-ish boyfriend was because he reminded you of him. You were young and super dumb in 6th grade so you didn’t really realize how messed up it was to be basically using you him. He didn’t particular look like him but he was called James and he hung out with Steve a bunch and he was super nice. It wasn’t until you had your first kiss with him did it dawn on you that he wasn’t Bucky and he would never be him,but before you could tell him that you wanted to call it off he had showed up to drag you home. He was acting worse than Steve.
“...You didn't say anything when Rebecca kissed her boyfriend!”
“That's different you aren't Rebecca.”
He loved Rebecca he didn't love you. He only saw you as his best friends little sister and that is all he would see you as and it hurt more than your 11 year old heart could take.
“I hate you buck.”
When you looked back on it know you felt like an idiot. For a hundred and one reasons. For being such a silly kid for, for using that poor kid even though really be was probably using you as well, but mostly for telling Bucky you hated him.
“Steve I don’t wanna ruin your movie I just want my candy!”
Bucky reached over the tiny couch tapping Steve's shoulder ever so lightly to get his attention trying his damnedest not to crinkle the empty Gummi Bear bag.
“Whats up buck?”
When he opened his hand the bag crinkled loudly and he closed his eyes waiting for Steve to yell at him. Like he always did when this happened.
“No.” Steve's replies as soon as his eyes drop down to the bag.
There's an almost hurt whine that comes from the back of his throat. This was a common occurrence whenever Bucky came over he would forage through the cupboards and fridge looking for snacks to munch on when he and Steve did homework and watched TV and somehow he'd always, subconsciously is what he'd tell Steve, end up eating your food specifically no one else's just yours. Your candy, your chips, your leftover chinese take out anything honestly.
“Steve please!” He begged. They went through this regularly. He would eat your stuff Steve would take the blame and then Bucky would rush out and buy way too much of whatever snack he had taken and have Steve return it.
“No. I'm not taking the blame this time.” Steve had told you a long time ago that if a snack of yours had come up missing 99 percent of the time it was because of Bucky. It was starting to get on your nerves a little bit. You wouldn't be mad if he just told you he ate your stuff, sure you wouldn't be pleased but the least he could do was acknowledge that he was doing it.
“if you take the blame this last time I'll … i'll do almost anything!” He begs.
“Anything?” Steve questions with a cocked eyebrow. He really just wanted buck to talk to you for one god damn second.
“Almost… anything.” Bucky offers a correction because he knew his best friend and he would be damned.
“I'm coming up there to look and see if you took them!” You yelled one last time as you walked towards the stairs.
“Steve I'm your best friend and I'm begging you to tell her you ate the fucking Gummi Bears!”
“Why can't you tell her you ate the Gummi Bears?” Steve asked with a knowing look on his face.
“Because she’ll yell at me.” He said through gritted teeth.
“Has she ever yelled at you? I'm pretty sure she's incapable of that.”
Of course Bucky never told Steve about what happened all those years ago because he knew Steve would ask what his problem was. Steve liked your boyfriend at the time he was pretty alright for the most part and explaining to Steve that he had a crush on his little sister was not the way Bucky wanted to die.
“Not necessarily yelled. But I bet she would!”
“You're an idiot.” He shrugged before calling back to you. “Fine,” Steve replied to as he locked eyes with Bucky, “I don't care come look.”
You made your way up the stairs two at a time. You knew Bucky had come over earlier today he was always over. You wanted to see him even if he wouldn’t talk to you, you could see him for a few seconds. When you had made it up the stairs you didn’t even bother to knock on Steve’s door he didn’t knock on yours it was only fair. When you opened the door you did a quick look around to see if Bucky was in there with Steve. But he wasn’t.
“So he definitely ate my candy right?” You asked as you made to lay across his bed.
“Oh yeah absolutely.” Steve said as he let his head fall back against the couch.
“Where’d he go?” You are flat on your back staring up at his ceiling a lot disappointed that you had missed him.
“Hopped out the window.” Steve hadn't looked at you yet.
“No way?” What the hell was wrong with your brothers idiot friend.
“Yep. Jumped right out of the window. Took a running leap even.” Steve was so tired of Buckys bull crap at this point he didn’t even care he had jumped
“Your friend is an idiot.”
“I told him that. Wanna watch this movie with me?”
“Hell yeah!”
You don't leave your brothers room until well past 1 am wanting nothing more than to lie in your bed and watch TV. Minus your favorite snack. You had assumed Bucky would have made his way back in that time but he hadn't. You and Steve had watched 2 entire movies in that time.
You always enjoyed quality time with your brother it didn't happen as much as either of you liked but when you did get the time it was great. You get half way through an episode of Wives with Knives when there's a soft knock on your door. That was weird Steve definitely didn't knock on your door and your parents had long since been to bed. "Come in!" You yell sitting up just a little bit.
"Hey." Bucky practically whispers as he opens your room door.
“Oh. Hey buck.”
“Can I um come in?” he asked after standing awkwardly for a bit of time.
“Uh yeah sure come in. Have a seat. I would offer some snacks but Steve ate the ones I was saving.” With that he walked in the last bit of the way before closing your room door.
“So whats up?” You tried not to sound so surprised.
“I uh .. I brought you some Gummi Bears because I ate yours earlier.” He said as he pulled the biggest bag of Gummi Bears you had ever seen out of his backpack.
You tried to plaster on the best shocked face you could, but you could feel the familiar tingle in your face of a smile. “You know Steve told me a few years ago it was you eating my stuff.” You said as he handed the bag to you. Opening the bag immediately you grabbed a handful.
“He did!” he almost shouted. “I mean really? He did, did he say anything else when he told you that?” He wouldn’t look at you instead focusing on your TV where it had been paused on a lady standing over her husbands bloody body. He didn't actually say anything else, but clearly Bucky was afraid Steve had told you something juicy and you wanted to know what that something was.
“Bucky.” You give him a look that screams really dude,“He’s my brother why wouldn’t he tell me?”
“I should have told you myself doll.” Doll?! Bucky only called his ‘best girls’ doll. You sat up straighter in your bed and leaned over to turn your TV completely off.
“You can tell me now.” You thought you sounded smooth but you genuinely couldn't be sure your heart was pounding. “So I can hear you say it and not Steve. Obviously.” You were so terribly bad at this.
He took a deep breath before he moved to sit on the edge of your bed. “I like you.” He had finally made eye contact with you at this point waiting for reaction.
You could feel the Gummi Bears in your hand squeeze together as your fist tightened around them “Pardon?” This wasn’t what you were expecting fuck if it wasn’t nice though.
“Haha. You just said Steve told you,”he lays back on your bed before he continues, “Or were you lying to me doll?” His head is in your lap now looking right into your eyes. He smelled like spearmint gum and you wanted to close your eyes to take it all in but he was so close you almost didn’t want to breath.
“Its only fair, how long have you been lying to me about my candy?” This had to be some sorta of trick or maybe you had jumped out of Steve’s window and fucking died. That sounded way more likely then James Bucky Barnes liking you.
“Sorry about the candy.” he said one last time.
Before you could even think about what you were gonna say your lips were moving. “Make it up to me with a kiss?”
Theres a smirk on his face just seconds before he dives in to cover your lips with his own. Buckys lips gently brush yours and they are so incredibly soft and everything you had fantasized they would be and some. The kiss is cut extremely short when you hear your door fly open and Steve is standing there.
“This is cute but its 1 am and you're in my little sisters room.” He said as he grabbed Bucky by his shirt and dragged him out of your room and down the hall back to his.
