Good Different

When Mobius suggests a night away, to the time and place of his choice, Loki thinks first of some of the more exotic places he’s traveled. Cosmopolitan cities, luxurious pleasure planets—gods, the things they could get up to in a night away on one of them! Perhaps Sakaar, he thinks, that strange and savage, technicolor realm he glimpsed in flashes of his life along the sacred timeline. It certainly seemed the sort of place where one might make a single night of blissful decadence feel like a lifetime.

Yes, Loki thinks, a place like that is the obvious answer, and the one he would’ve given at nearly any other point in his life. Yet now, here, when he searches his heart, Loki finds only one place he truly wishes to visit.

“It’s, ehm, different,” Loki says—quite charitably, he thinks—of the wind-battered, ramshackle cottage. The pigs mucking about, smell of ale and salted fish, the casks drained and left to rot out in the side yard.

“Good different? Or bad different?”

“I’m not sure yet.”

Mobius nods. He rests a gentle hand on Loki’s back. “Hey,” he says, “you nervous?”

Loki scoffs. “Of course not.”

“It’s okay if you are. Heck, I am. Feel my hand.” Mobius takes his. “Yeah, I’m actually sweating.”

Loki makes a careful study of Mobius’s features under the hazy pale morning light. Come to think of it now, Loki isn’t quite sure he’s ever seen Mobius nervous. Foolish, yes, but steady and brave—that’s what Mobius is—and he trusts Loki enough not to get nervous in his presence. Perhaps, Loki thinks ruefully, if Mobius possessed better self-preservation instincts, they might never have made it here, never have found each other.

“You,” Loki says, “nervous? Codswallop.”

“It’s your brother. How could I not be?”

look at this! @mirilyawrites bound my fic like a prayer into an actual, beautiful book (inside a tiny manila folder, like you’d find in an office, which is very thematically on-point). it is an absolute honor and just about the coolest thing I’ve ever seen.

WIP Wednesday Thursday

I was tagged by @mirilyawrites to share up to 300 words of a work in progress (thank you!). This is a fic that I stupidly saved the finished first chapter of as a draft on ao3, went on vacation and had a ton of other life-stuff happen and forgot about, and came back to find had been deleted. Luckily I did have an earlier version saved so I’ve been working on recreating and—hopefully, someday—finishing it. Encouragement always appreciated!

"And what of my future," Loki asks, "have you had a look?"

Frigga shakes her head.

"Would you tell me if you had?"

Frigga shakes her head again.

"Of course not."

"I can tell you this. Prince Mobius"—so Mobius is his name then, this mortal prince? It's not quite what Loki expected, and he finds that he must stifle a brief, hot spark of interest—"I've had the pleasure of meeting him and, oh Loki, you know I wouldn't let your father marry you off to just anyone."

"I've no idea what you or father"—Loki snarls the word—"would do." He squirms snakelike out of his mother's gasp, stalks to the far window, and gazes out at the Asgardian stars. If Odin has his way, this may well be the last time Loki sees these constellations. He resolves viciously not to miss them.

"Loki, I am sorry that I lied but I swear I wished only for you to feel that you belonged here. With me, with us. Your family."

"Right."

"Perhaps it is time now for you to find your own belonging. You could do that—happily, I believe—with this Prince Mobius."

Loki's voice is flat and without affect. "A Midgardian."

"Not just any Midgardian."

"Oh, a special Midgardian then! How droll."

Frigga clicks her tongue. "He is a kind one."

“human behavior” (a banger of a bjork track)

yesss and that is where the title comes from! this is a silicon valley richard/jared fic in which jared is an android created by hooli. I don't think I'll ever finish it, but here's a lil excerpt:

"When you say stuff like that"—Richard doesn't look up from the circuit board he's meddling with, but Jared can almost feel his attention, as if it’s the warmth of the sun—"sometimes I forget you're not actually human."

"Well Jareds are designed to be lifelike."

"How do they, uh - is it, like - you can't have had a mother?"

Coming from someone else, this line of questioning might read as rude or even taboo, but Richard's curiosity is so beautiful and genuine, it'd be unfair to deny it.

Jared gestures to his head. "Memory implant. Easy enough to remove, so they always have that to threaten you with. Unscrew the skullplate, snip a few wires, and poof!" Jared chuckles. There were times, though, when he wouldn't have minded, his particular set of memories more a burden and a curse.

It's a glittering, deceptive libertarian fantasy. Jared had warned Richard thus when he first mentioned investing in cryptocurrency. He'd tried to explain how Edith lost her retirement to PayCoin speculation. Richard refused to listen.

Still, Jared wasn’t the type to say I told you so. So when Richard’s investment went predictably belly-up, Jared offered nothing but his steadfast support and companionship, and when Richard and his worn Stanford dufflebag turned up in disarray on Jared’s doorstep, Jared welcomed him inside with nary a cheeky comment.

“No girls, heh?” Richard lingered in the entree, fussing with the strings on his sweatshirt.

"No girls." Jared smiled. "I cleared my calendar for you."
