Trying to plan a fun day Saturday after we're done with our JDRF walk, but everything costs money and we already spent $200 on this walk/diabetes gear. Cool thing is we're going to have diabetes shirts! :]

The JDRF Walk raises money for life-changing T1D research. Join the Walk today.
Hey, people of tumblr! This is the first (and probably only) time I've done something like this on here.
Diabetes is a serious, life-threatening condition that affects millions of people across the globe. One of those people is my little sister, who just turned 15. She was diagnosed with Type One diabetes when she was 11, and because of it, developed celiac, an autoimmune disease wherein any gluten in her body triggers her immune system to attack the lining of her intestines, at 13.
Type one diabetes is typically diagnosed at younger ages. There are too many children, children like my sister and even younger than her, little babies, who have diabetes. For those of you who don't know, here's the difference between types one and two diabetes.
Type two typically develops later in one's life due to the proteins in the cell membranes ceasing to recognize insulin correctly and therefore not using it properly. It is often caused by a poor diet and lack of exercise. It is avoidable and reversible.
Type one is an autoimmune disease. The pancreatic cells that produce insulin, the hormone needed to allow glucose molecules to enter cells for basic function, are destroyed by the immune system. The result: insulin is no longer produced, and glucose molecules can't enter cells. Cells need glucose for energy, and since the glucose can't enter the cell without the insulin, no energy is produced and the cells die. The cause of type one is unknown, but speculated to be genetic or caused by certain viruses. There is no known cure.
But! Scientists are working on trying to find a cure! JDRF, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, is an international organization whose goal is to raise money and awareness for the curing of the disease and making lives of those with T1D better.
This year, my family is involved in a Walk for the Cure sort of thing. We've got our own little team and stuff. But the problem is, no amount of walking is going to raise money.
So, please. If you can, donate! Any amount you can afford is appreciated! ALL proceeds go to diabetes research. It's not a pay-per-mile-we-walk thing. You can donate $1 if you want. You can donate $100. Alternatively, you can join our team. You can be a physical walker if you come to the event (date, time, and location are on the page in the link), or a virtual walker. For the latter, you simply join the team and show your support. You don't actually have to walk. If you can do any or all of these things, please do so, and spread the word! If you can't, please reblog anyway! Please, for all the kids suffering from this disease; for my little sister.
