I got the limited box set a couple days ago, and currently am rewatching the series. I'm on episode 6, and I think the english dub is fantastic. Nine's voice especially. You can really tell where they wanted to go with his voice, and I feel like I'm getting a whole new experience out of it. I'm excited to hear your thoughts on it!

Ahhh!!! You’re so lucky, I can’t wait to have it in my hands. I found a site that has all dubbed episodes and even though I have a mountain of work I’ll start watching in a few minutes ^^. I bet it’s going to give me all kinds of different feels. I know I mighy be a little critical of the voices, especially Twelve’s but I’m hoping it’ll grow on me.

And yeah, I will post my comments for each episode :D

what were your thoughts on red garden?

You know how to pick them. You really do. More after the break.

The first few episodes were interesting, but it wasn’t till the middle of the series that I felt really invested in the characters. In the end, I loved Claire and Kate the most. Felt the worst for Rose. Rachel… eh… she was okay? Never truly felt particularly invested in her.

As for the story… This show makes no bones that this is a dark show. When episode one starts with a suicide, scenes with the girls looking at their old bodies in coffins, having to kill to live, and not knowing the purpose until towards the end.

Then the horrible realization that, not only will they be immortal, they will forget their memories. Of all the characters, I felt worse for Rose in that regard. I shed tears when her father showed up for Christmas… I like to believe that, for a few minutes, they were all reunited. Her family will probably take her missing the worst. I guess, in some ways, it is better that they all lose their memories.

When the big reveal happens, I was duly horrified. I would have liked to have learned more: Why do the books exist? Who created them? But this was always a character-driven show and the books were MacGuffin in the end.

Hervé… I understood why he did what he did. But I’m still glad he went the way he did.

Dark, emotional, and a downer-ending of the series despite the imagery. The OVA was interesting, even though everyone was expy of someone in the past.

Also, the cops… Law & Order references?

This series is just DARK and emotional. Also, I have a lot of the music stuck in my head.

Mawaru Penguindrumnever seen it | need to see it | hate it | ugh | it was okay | i liked it | LOVED IT | one of my faves Notes: It was weird at the beginning, and dark but just got darker. Then the end, when dark and weird went into maximum overdrive. And that final letter.

Revolutionary Girl Utenanever seen it | need to see it | hate it | ugh | it was okay | i liked it | LOVED IT | one of my faves Notes: The contradictions in Utena’s character and Anthy’s character arc are what make the series. I could have done without some of the plots of the other characters, but that was like an episode here and there. However, I loved the movie. Mainly cause Ikuhara could get away with everything he couldn’t get away with in the TV series. I’m also convinced he was dropping acid while writing the script for the movie. Also, the opening song is catchy and when you mentioned you were watching it, it got stuck in my head again.

Colorfulnever seen it | need to see it | hate it | ugh | it was okay | i liked it | LOVED IT | one of my faves Notes: You and @roxyroxas1313 independently recommended this movie to me and it just stabbed my heart. We all could use a Purapura in our lives (Honestly, I have had one, which is probably why I am alive). I still get emotional when Makoto finally eats a meal his mom prepared with his family (the soup). 

Nagi no Asukaranever seen it | need to see it | hate it | ugh | it was okay | i liked it | LOVED IT | one of my faves Notes: I’ll be honest here... I did not think I was going to like it as much as I did. But the relationship between the characters, the issues between land and sea people... the hibernation... Gah.

Claymore (Manga)never seen it | need to see it | hate it | ugh | it was okay | i liked it | LOVED IT | one of my faves Notes: I am 100% unfiltered, unadulterated, and pure Claymore trash. From the moment I saw Clare on screen, I fell in love. Then Teresa. Then Jean... Jean... This series kinda impacted my life the way Dune did before and that was many years ago.

ship with: I like to believe that he finds someone eventually… but there’s no one canonically that fits. 

friendship them with: CHITTO! Such a great friend to Helga and Thoma…

general opinions: I think you remember my bit of liveblogging and messages I was sending you, but tragic is a good word. What he did as Sess… when he remembers and that look of heartbreak… Just… How many times did he seek redemption? How many times did he fail? I love him, flaws and all.

Helga

ship with: Soran. How many years, how many lives? Yeah, this was written in the universe.

friendship them with: Thoma, Chitto, and the surviving Befort Children.   

general opinions: Gah… how much can I say without spoiling this heavily? Tragic is another word for it. What was done to her, what she had to see… all those lives she lived… reaching out…

Shouma

character: hate them | don’t really care | like them | LOVE them | THEY ARE MY PRECIOUS

ship with:  HE SAVED HIMARI. SHE WAS HIS SOULMATE! I… AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. Note: If you’ve never watched Penguindrum and, therefore, do not understand my reaction here… GO OUT AND WATCH THAT SERIES. Then this will make sense.

friendship them with: His brother, Kanba. Gah, that ending… why am I having visions of that ending? 

general opinions: Refer back to point two: HE SAVED HIMARI. Just… such a wonderful character. Yes, he’s much outwardly emotional than Kanba but… you always knew his emotions were genuine.

Kaname

character: hate them | don’t really care | like them | LOVE them | THEY ARE MY PRECIOUS

ship with:  Sayu

friendship them with: Pretty much everyone? Who doesn’t want to be Kaname’s friend. Especially after he wakes up.  

general opinions: He always felt a little bit like the outsider of the group. Possibly cause he was the most mature and could make those difficult adult decisions. He moved on from Chisaki when he realized that, no, Chisaki would never feel that way about him.
