Strictly speaking, in the books it’s heavily implied that they don’t work at all. But most likely Shireen dies in the novels and D&D said “Fuck it”. Or she lives and they said “Fuck it.”

Same, Same, Same why are leaches not satisfactory?? Also I would like to know the exact reasoning for any sacrifice at all? Is it the weather? The Enemies? Why? Can there be an explanation for at least one bit of this cause none of it makes sense.
Yes I agree in the books it seems that they don’t really work or at least Stannis never buys it but in the show he is convinced there is power in her magic. So, he asks about the leeches and Mel doesn’t answer him and tells him there must be a sacrifice. Stannis is a logical man, in book and show - he reads, he asks Sam to read about how the white walkers can be killed. Now he doesn’t bother to find out more about just why he needs to sacrifice his daughter? Maybe they answer this tonight, but I’m just tired of nothing making sense.
Also in the books the sacrifice is for the big battle, AA against the white walkers and this is a lesser battle. Nothing makes sense! Ugh.
