Exhibition: Jenkin van Zyl - 'Surrender'
The dark and twisted exhibition created by Zyl plays with queer irreverence, role play, and fantasy. The main part of the exhibition is a short film that follows the trial and tribulations of abstract human/rat hybrids in a deadly competition to become the 'Rat King', following grueling tournaments that play with the limitations and expansiveness of the body.
The visual landscape is partnered with heavy, industrial sound pieces that highlight the discomfort and grueling nature within the film.
It may have been one of my favorite exhibitions that I have attended, but the completely absurd, perverted yet camp performance left me questioning conformity and societal roles.
