GAME OF THE YEAR!!!
Hey! I've never played Jedi the Fallen Order but I'm considering getting it after checking out your blog, what's your favorite parts about it? What's the storyline like? The fighting? Can you be a super cool badass Jedi? (Aka: Should I get the game?)
Hello! Thanks for asking, though I might be a bit biased here because I like the game a lot, I’ll try to explain how I feel about the game without spoiling it, lol.
First of all, things that can stop you from buying the game:
60$ (It’s a brand-new AAA game so I wouldn’t expect sales on it anytime soon)
EA (Respawn on the other hand 100% deserves money)
You don’t want to play as a male protagonist
Now to the things that are good.
The story:
Pretty simple. You’re a survivor of the Order 66. You need to save what is left of the Jedi Order because of [SPOILERS]. But the main themes of the game are actually forgiveness, dealing with a trauma and friendship. Cal’s journey is very personal, it’s not about saving the world and being the ultimate hero. Sure, Cal will have plenty of cool hero moments, they’re just much more subtle than those we’re used to watch on a big screen. His companions are pretty important for the plot as well, and I can’t imagine anyone who wouldn’t love Cere, Cal’s new mentor figure. There will be a cool plot twist near the end, that will please you if you’re a fan of the original trilogy and animated series.
The combat:
Very solid and entertaining. Some call it “easy-mod Sekiro” and that’s mostly correct. It’s based on parry-dodge-block-strike model with timings and at any point of the game you can die easily if you’re carelessly rush at your enemies without using your abilities or environment. Stick to the story mod or normal for the first time, if you want to experience the story first, and to not worry too much about running from meditation spots half of your playthrough. Aesthetically it looks amazing, feels like Star Wars and despite you being a Jedi you’re never an OP killing machine. It’s always fun to fight in this game.
The lore:
The game is very careful with the universe’s legacy and treats everything that came before with respect. There’re new monsters (most are hostile, but some are not), new planets, new characters, but they all fit in just fine. You will meet a couple of old characters you’re familiar with if you only watched the movies, so it’s alright for non-gaming fans to play the game. You also can visit Dathomir (Darth Maul’s homeworld) and Ilum (snowy planet from SWTOR).
The gameplay:
It’s not a 100% action game. It’s not a real RPG. You have a skill tree and sometimes you will be able to choose a reply in a dialogue, but for the most part it’s a hybrid of a few genres. If you’re like me and enjoy clever puzzle-solving, then good news! When you’re not fighting off the Empire or collecting flower seeds for the terrarium on your ship, you will be trying to get access to the ancient vaults using your brain and the Force. If you ever played Darksiders games, then it will feel familiar. There’re some elements of metroidvania: you can return to the old planets to explore the undiscovered parts when you get new abilities. Also keep in mind that you can’t save your game on a whim. There’re Dark Souls-like places for meditation which serve as saving spots.
Okay, it took long enough to tell you if it’s a good game or not… IT IS A FANTASTIC GAME! I highly recommend you to get it, if you can. It took me 30 hours to finish and I enjoyed every minute of it. Hope you will enjoy it as well if you decide to give it a chance :)
P.S. Cal’s hair animation is amazing. You can also adopt a fluffy little animal. 13/10, GOTY.
