Hello, so Dead Pools is said to be a homage to Swimming Pools by kendrick lamar, I’ve been curious if hypmic actually gave credit to him? If you don’t know the answer thats fine, i just don’t know what to search to check. Have a good day!
Short Answer:
There is no official credit to Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Swimming Pools’. There’s a number of reasons why it hasn’t been credited, and no matter who you ask, you’ll get different opinions. Apparently Asanuma said it’s a homage in a niconama stream, but I’ve never seen this stream.
Long Answer:
Apparently Asanuma gave credit in a stream, specifically pointing towards the song. However, nobody has given an answer as to when this would’ve been said. So I would give a rough estimate of this happening around April - May 2019, since the song was released in April. I’m not sure if anyone has a record of this, but it would really clear things up.
Officially, Hypnosis Mic has not credited the song. If it’s not there on the track information, then it’s not official credit - there aren’t any tweets about it on the official twitter either.
Unnecessary, but still useful answer:
However, one could argue that credit isn’t necessary because it’s a very obvious reference.
Swimming Pools = Dead Pools. Both songs are about ‘drowning’ in a certain lifestyle. The accompaniment is very similar - but this isn’t very hard to replicate because it’s a beat and a bass line. The rhythms of Samatoki and Jyuto match up in the verses, well, more like the verses are conformed to the original songs verses. If they were trying to get away with plagiarism, then maybe don’t do things so obviously. They’ve done this with other songs too. In any case, if there is no legal claim from Lamar or other artists, then it’s technically legal - it’s legal so long as someone calls it illegal basically.
IMO - I would like some official confirmation of ‘this song is a homage to xxx’ so more fans go to listen to rap music, but at least HypMic is trying in other ways to get people involved in rap.
