OBJECT OF THE WEEK SERIES-34 (11th to 17th January, 2021) JHARI Liquor container made of bell metal वेबसाइट की लिंक / Website link - https://igrms.com/wordpress/?page_id=2081 Jhari is a liquor container made of bell metal. It is used for storing the local liquor (Mahua daru or Salfi) by the Bison Horn Maria people of Bastar, Chhattisgarh. The container has a circular base with a projected body at the middle that contains jingles decorated around its circular periphery. This circular hanging element produces sound when shaken. The upper body contains elaborate designs laid in geometrical patterns. It also has a detachable lid to meet the functional requirement of pouring liquor into the container. A curved spout decorated with jingles is fitted to fulfill the purpose of serving and drinking the liquor. Mahua liquor, as a local brew, plays an important role in the socio-religious and economic sphere of the traditional Maria life. It is distilled by themselves and stored for consumption according to their needs. During ceremonies or social gatherings, liquor is served through Jhari into the cups made of leaves. The Bison-Horn Maria tribe usually acquire Jhari from the Gharwa artisans specializing in traditional metal crafts prepared by the lost wax techniques. Over time, the liquor container of this kind is being replaced by glass bottles, which are affordable and cheaply available in the local markets.
