Back in Stock! Peace, Photographs by Jim Marshall / Available at www.draw-down.com / With a foreword by Shepard Fairey, text by Peter Doggett, and afterword by Joan Baez. Jim Marshall: Peace collects the beloved photographer’s previously unseen “peace” photographs, taken mainly between 1961 and 1968. Photographing across America, Marshall charted the life of a symbol, documenting how the peace sign went from holding a specific anti-nuclear meaning to serving as a broad, internationally recognized symbol for peace. Marshall captured street graffiti in the New York subway, buttons pinned to hippies and students, and West Coast peace rallies held by a generation who believed, for a brief moment, they could make a difference. The Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) symbol, also known as the peace sign, was designed in 1958 by Gerald Holtom for the British Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. When the design spread from the UK to the American anti-war campaign, it caught the eye of Marshall, who saw himself as an anthropologist and journalist documenting the changing times of the 1960s. In between official assignments, Marshall started photographing the symbol and peace rallies as a personal project. He tabled these images on an index card in his archives labeled “Peace,” where they remained, until now. #graphicdesign #typography #peace #JimMarshall #ShepardFairey #symbol
DENNIS HOPPER, BRIAN JONES, AND NICO. Original photograph from the Monterey Pop Festival, 1967. Struck by photographer Jim Marshall circa 1990s. Jim Marshall was one of the most prolific and influential chroniclers of rock music during the 1960s and 1970s. Among his most iconic photographs are images of Jimi Hendrix setting his guitar on fire at Monterey Pop, Johnny Cash performing at San Quentin, and The Beatles backstage at Candlestick Park. In 2014, he was posthumously awarded a Lifetime Achievement Grammy, the only photographer to be so honored. [email protected] #jimmarshall #rockstars #dennishopper #nico #1970s
A 15-story portrait of Johnny Cash by Shepard Fairey in downtown Sacramento. Painted for 2018’s edition of Wide Open Walls, curated by Branded Arts. The image was a collaboration with the estate of Jim Marshall for Fairey's American Civics project, on the 50th anniversary of Cash’s famous Folsom Prison performance. The portrait looks in the direction towards Folsom Prison and is intended both as a tribute to The Man In Black and as a commentary on incarceration reform, a cause he was passionate about.
