Vee for victory
(This piece appeared in the Daily Record on Tuesday, 23 September, ahead of the broadcast of The Caretaker. It was slashed to pieces and it’s not the piece I originally wrote - but hey, that’s what subs-editors are there for! It’s a chat with Jimmy Vee - the Skovox Blitzer, and several other parts too)
HE’S only 3ft 8in tall but Scots actor Jimmy Vee has a big place in Doctor Who folklore.
He’s just played his SIXTH different alien on the show.
Jimmy, from Harthill, West Lothian, stars opposite Peter Capaldi this Saturday as the Scovox Blitzer, an evil robot out to destroy humanity.
And he had a ball working with his fellow Scot.
Jimmy said: “Peter’s great – I got on with him really well. He’s playing it quite naturally, just going out to do it his own way.”
Jimmy has acted with the last four Doctors. He played the Moxx of Balhoon and the Spacepig in different episodes with Christopher Eccleston, and took on David Tennant as the villainous Graske.
Then came his Doctor Who highlight – getting engaged to Kylie Minogue as the heroic Bannakaffalatta in the 2007 Christmas special, Voyage of the Damned.
Jimmy also encountered Matt Smith when he played a Groske – a bit like a Graske, but nicer.
He meets fans all over the UK at Doctor Who autograph signing events and reckons the show is “taking off all over the world”.
