SHE COULD have sworn her heart forgot how to beat correctly for a minute. That wasn’t a sentence she was used to hearing; but she knew he meant it with kind intentions. She was overworking herself again. Koemi’s gaze fell to her hands slightly as she put on a faint smile, biting her lower lip faintly, before a sigh of laughter came from her. “Mom, huh …? Well … I suppose if you promised her, I’ll listen. I’m sure she gets disappointed when promises are broken.”
Her expression made him understand he said something wrong. How many times could JJ screw it in a day was a mystery. And probably no one dared to find out. He scratched the back of his neck, trying to think of a smart thing to say or at least funny, so her smile would come back. “My mom-- I promised her not to do crazy things, she is an old woman and doesn’t need strong emotions in her life. Mom says I’m too old to get drunk home every time I go out--” His words were most likely to fail in his attempt to overshadow his foolishness.
