When Live becomes Alive
When I was a kid and watched a music concert on TV, I thought that the audience are idiots. It was like "Come on, I can see the artist more clear and bigger on TV screen. Why you have to come there and sometimes must struggle with the crowd to get a better view." But now, whenever I find my favorite artist or maybe not-that-familiar artist, orchestra, or big band will perform, it will attract me to attend it.
Since few years ago, I've watched live performances (not on TV) more frequently. It's not about my attendance or the playlist, but it's about the experience, the vibe, the crowd, and the moments. Well you see, when you watch a performance on TV, you are a person who sit down and focus on the screen. When you watch it live, you are connected with the crowd and the performers. It's like connection between energies. No matter if you come alone, you feel connected. Well, I felt it when I came to Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival 2012 few weeks ago. The festival was held for three days and I'd bought my 3-Days-Pass ticket since the first day of pre-sale (I forgot when it was). I also watched Special Show by Herbie Hancock and of course I'd bought the ticket since the first-day of pre-sale (niat abis ya). When I bought those tickets, I wasn't thinking about who would accompany me. My family is not a big fan of jazz, so I wasn't hoping them to come with me. I just want to come to that festival for three days no matter what.
Well, I thought some of my close friends would come because they usually go there. Unfortunately, some didn't come, some only come on Saturday, and some only come on Sunday. But that didn't bring me down to watch the show *evil laugh. And thank God my grandma is in Jakarta so I know where to sleep while there. Since it was a festival, you would find many stages and many artist. Even though I found some of my friends there, we were watching different artist. So, the thing is I watched without any friends. Well, I don't care about that. I only watched some performances. On Saturday, I met my friend Putri, we only watched D'Sound but I didn't watch until finish because I had to go to Hall A2 to get a good spot before Dave Koz's performance. On Sunday, I went to Java Jazz with my church friends because I slept over in their house that day. We only watched Twilite Orchestra and Trio Lestari together, after that we were separate.
What I found from those three days experience was beside the inspirations, I think it was great to be part of the energy in the venue even though you didn't know who were in front, back, left, right of you. Every stages had different vibe. And the most important thing is the moment. What I mean on "the moment" is you will find spontaneous act or surprising improvement that you won't get on the record.
So people, stop window shopping in the mall, because you won't get any inspirations there. What you get is stress because you want by this, that, and this with a hopeless pocket.
Gain more inspirations from creative venues (not malls). Now, I'm looking for art exhibition and museums.
Happy looking for inspirations and improve your creativity!
