Just some thoughts I’ve had musing about a few narrative visuals in Ch.170 & Ch.171.

Megumi’s Domain is still incomplete, therefore not imbued with any sure-hit cursed technique yet. He had even admitted it himself earlier on—barrier techniques are difficult to master and he hasn’t fully grasped how to impose a perfected metaphysical barrier with jujutsu over real tangible space. The next best ideal he could come up with was to imbue his cursed energy into the shadows of an already existing covered space (the gymnasium) for it to act as his imperfect “barrier”, which then grants him control of the space within. Knowing this, he must have then decided (or realized) one way to further use this imperfection to his advantage was to also impose a binding vow with himself, to increase the potential of his cursed technique to 120% and thus expanding the function and abilities of Ten Shadows. And as with all jujutsu contracts, there’s always a trade-off. For this self-imposed binding upon himself, it is the conditions of his imperfect Domain itself—not just the existing finite storage capacity of his shadows, but also how he has to bear the actual physical weight of anything that is placed into/gets pulled into his shadows.

It’s similar to how Nanami has his own self-imposed binding vow: when Nanami clocks out of his official shifts working on missions, he invokes Overtime to increase the output of his cursed energy (again, up to 120%... why this magic number, Sensei? lol) and overall combat capabilities. But in order to hit that 120% potential, he suppresses his cursed technique output to only 80-99% (I think? I don’t remember the exact numbers lmfao) when he’s working on the clock. Of course, it’s not explicitly stated that Megumi did make binding vow with himself just to pull this off, so this is just mostly conjecture. But I figured it’s somewhat implied that jujutsushi don’t always have to literally say “This is a binding vow/Let’s make a binding vow” to each other (or themselves) for them to know when a contract is being enacted. The thing that makes a contract/binding vow, well, binding, is that 1. it is mutually beneficial (or ideally so), and 2. both parties acknowledge and verbally agree to the set conditions of said contract. Breaking a contract would be severely detrimental to the one who decides not to uphold their end of the agreement, especially so if it’s a binding done with someone else; they would bear the unknown penalty and be punished. That isn’t to say breaking a self-imposed contract doesn’t come with its own drawbacks; it’s just that the consequences would not be as damning. In Kenjaku’s own words, at the most a sorcerer would simply lose what they had gained with a self-imposed binding. Still, there are probably ways to circumvent the conditions or to manipulate the less-suspecting party into agreeing to a contract with misleading words, especially for sorcerers wily enough to weasel their way out of it—looking at you, Kenjaku lol. Or like the way Sukuna manipulated Yuuji to accept the conditions of their contract by misleading Yuuji to settle it with a fight he could never have won in the first place (because Sukuna is just inhumanly fast and a centuries-old seasoned warrior).

The shibari binding knot tied around the giant vertebrae that appears in Megumi’s Domain also seems to suggest an existing binding vow too, if not just for the visual aesthetic. I do feel though that Akutami-sensei tends to be pretty specific about certain details he chooses to draw, to hint at something more. With Nanami, he’s also shown to have similar visual hints of his own Overtime binding; he removes his neck tie and binds it over his right fist as he invokes it. As with most of my keysmashing, I could be wrong, of course lol. Maybe Megumi didn’t make a binding vow with himself, and Akutami-sensei really is just going for the Aesthetic (tm) reminiscent of debilitating lower back troubles lol. But the way he incorporates these visuals as part of his story-telling and characterization is still interesting to think about nonetheless.

CH 171 rants, get ready: 1. Reggie is pretty dmart and sophisticated in his strategy & thinking. At first I thought his cursed technique was pretty weird, but nothing too impressive. Boy was I wrong. Reggie uses his cursed technique to his advantage, and his observational skills + perceptions made him able to go on par with Fushiguro. Truly an interesting foe! 2. FUSHIGURO!!! Now we're learning more about his shadow technique. I agree, it may have something to do with gravity... cont part 2 rant

(2) Part 2 rant: I'm eagerly awaiting for Gege sensei to explain about Fushiguro's 10 Shadows Technique. If it's said to be on par with the Six Eyes, it's not unreasonable to think it might be gravity-related. 3. Funny how the fight started as sophisticated, but the chapter ended with both parties basically being dumped with a heck ton of weight LOLOLOL

Me, too, anon. I can feel you. The fight this time is truly great! And Reggie, despite having unapprovable fashion sense (but very practical actually), he seems to be quite strong. He could be very well a Grade 1. And going kinda wild is what Fushiguro do when he is fighting alone. He's the same type of sorcerer as Gojo and Sukuna; the one who is the strongest when they are fighting alone. His shadow is practically a black hole. And knowing Akutami, I wouldn't be surprised if it's later incorporated somehow to his technique.

I, too, am waiting for the next chapter to come out. I really want to see his growth and development.
