Thank you so much for your blog! I just want to tell you how much I appreciate that you defend such a complex character who has done many mistakes but who was, in the end, a brave man repenting for his past errors...I have always rooted snape even before knowing where his loyalty lays...Seeing him being trashed while other characters (like Tom Riddle) are being praised or even excused for their actions gratuitously has always nagged me. Especially since, all in all, he died in the name of love.
the thing is that there are SO MANY anti-hero characters on tumblr who get accepted or even loved w/o much complaint in their fandoms (i guess i’m thinking like... loki and anakin skywalker?). who do way worse shit in their canon and yet still people are recognizing that they are flawed characters and that doesn’t mean people can’t like them (or that liking them somehow makes the fan an abuser themselves). and that happens in hp fandom too, like you said - there are plenty of people who like the malfoys or voldemort or bellatrix and then turn around and accuse snape of being a child abusing rapist lmao. it’s gross! and frankly biased and hypocritical as hell.
the important thing for me - the thing that makes me like snape whereas i can be indifferent to some other characters with similar moral apathy - is that snape, as you said, redeems himself. in a very big way. i liked snape before we knew his true loyalties as well, but i always hoped that he was actually on the side of the light (ironically i hoped that would make more people like him.... and yet somehow people hate him more now despite the fact that he was working on the good side all along????). he does so much and gets so little back for it and that rings true for me. i like his moral apathy, i like that he gave up his entire life to undermine his friend’s killer. and i sympathize with him a lot - i was a lonely, awkward, poor kid who couldnt make friends and drove away the friends i did have. i was ostracized in school. snape being able to become someone despite that - to work for the side of the light despite that - really moves me.
and it’s frustrating bc antis seem to generally think that people only like snape because they see him as this romantic ideal and have no ~*~true idea~*~ of who he Really Is, as if no one could possibly empathize or like snape FOR his flaws or who he is as a character. that we’re somehow blind to it and THAT’S why we like snape.... which is patronizing af tbh
anyway. thank you for the support!
