Every Record I Own - Day 667: Jodis Black Curtain
Our tastes change as we get older, but I’ve also found that my expectations and demands from music change even more. As a kid, you want music that spells it all out for you. You want something that grabs you every time you hear it. And to be fair, I still have an appetite for an easy hook and a three-minute song. But my record collection is slowly turning more and more into a repository for music that isn’t suitable for very many occasions.
I rearranged my records last year because I was getting option paralysis every time I was browsing my albums. Having something like Jodis filed next to George Jones and Judas Priest was scrambling my brain. Jodis is a studio project between Aaron Turner, James Plotkin, and Tim Wyskida. One might imagine that Turner teaming up with the rhythm section of Khanate would yield some seriously heavy dissonance, but Black Curtain is really a thing of sparse, patient beauty. Plotkin slowly unravels these lush, reverberating chords on the guitar while Wyskida punctuates a few key moments in the musical phrasing with the occasional kick drum stomp, cymbal swell, or tom thud. Turner’s melodic vocals echo as if emanating from an enormous Gothic church. There are no “riffs.” There are no “beats.” The overall vibe of Black Curtain is a sublime weightlessness with a few crucial percussive elements and menacing moments to keep it tethered to a fallible terra firma. So yeah... it’s a very different vibe than the classic honky-tonk of George Jones or the vintage ass-kicking of Judas Priest.
So now Jodis lives in a section of my library that I have designated as “nighttime vibes”---cuz while this record did sound pretty sweet on my turntable this morning, it’s really a much better album for winding down after a late night.
And I’ll be honest here: prior to this morning, I hadn’t heard this album since December 2012. I remember that last spin very clearly. I had the apartment to myself. I’d gone out for a couple of drinks with some friends and then come home to work on packing for our move from Seattle to NYC. I threw this album on to have some background music while I filled some boxes, and instead wound up sinking into the couch and staring at the wall while the album played. It was an immersive experience, and I remember being so moved by the music that the record took on a kind of sacredness. I knew it wasn’t something I could relive or re-create anytime I threw the LP on the turntable. It was just a rare, perfect moment for the mood of this album.
How many more of those moments will I have with Black Curtain? It’s hard to say. Probably not many. But that’s okay. I can listen to George Jones another hundred times while I do dishes, but Jodis can get spun once a decade and still earn its keep in the record collection.

Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan are the most charming couple of the B-town and we can’t enough of them. Over the years this pair has just become more attractive and good-looking. Their love story began on film sets. According to reports, the two got attracted towards each other while shooting for 2008 release ‘Tashan’. The couple tied the knot in 2013, after over five years of…

Here Are The Bollywood Jodis We Are Looking Forward To In 2020
This year has given us some eye candy jodis that have taken over the big screen with their chemistry and sass. We had Ranveer and Alia in Gully Boy; Hrithik and Tiger in War; Kangana and Rajkummar in Judgementall Hai Kya and the list goes on. We also yet to see the witty Akshay Kumar and the gorgeous Kareena Kapoor in Good Newwz, which is set to release on the 27th of December. While the year is…

Discussion Post (Remember, A Christmas Card is on the Line! COMMENT!): Rank SRK Jodis from 2010 to 2019
This should be a gimme, surely! Everyone has to have an opinion on this, right? Say something, let me know you are alive! Not that I am anyone to talk, I know what’s happening, I spent time this week buying and mailing Christmas cards and putting up decorations and so on. But still, can’t we take a little time to talk about meaningless stuff on the internet even during the holiday season?
