“BLOOM”
by Hueman
Despite having lost a seven-year battle with cancer in 2007, Joel Bloom is still remembered as the tireless community activist who helped shape the LA Arts District and served for years as its unofficial mayor. In a rare honor by the city, shortly before his passing, the epicenter of the Arts District, at Traction Ave. and 3rd St., was formally named Joel Bloom Square. Given the opportunity to honor Bloom on a wall overlooking the intersection, and a wall that until last year had held an immensely popular mural by Dabs and Myla and How & Nosm, Allison Tinati, aka Hueman, was feeling doubly pressured. The Oakland based artist had painted in the Arts District numerous times in the past, including her first LA mural which was just a block away, but she says “it was a little surreal working directly with the city on this one.” Hueman also reports she had to overcome “scary memories” of doing graphic design behind a computer and for the very first time included typography in her work. @hueman_ @arts_district_la

One Year Anniversary For Brainitch
Thank you ahead of time for reading.
Today is Bloom Fest in the Arts District, which is a day to remember Joel Bloom; a pioneering urbanist, artist, playwright, and actor who had a vision. Joel lived in the Arts District for 20 years and gave birth to the community’s soul. He sadly died in 2007 after battling cancer for 7 years. The community still keeps his spirit alive by remembering him with an all day festival today at Angel City Brewery, Art Share LA and The Container Yard. I have only lived/worked here since July, but I already feel part of this tight-knit community.
I moved Brainitch to the Arts District in Downtown Los Angeles in July after posting up in Mid-Wilshire at Be Great Partners. Here in the AD, the community is young, vibrant, and developing fast. We have The Hub, which is an amazing co-working space and community for social innovation, and the LA Cleantech incubator is under development across the street from us.
We love it here in our new community. Our neighbors are what make it special and we are grateful to be surrounded by so many like-minded creatives and entrepreneurs. They all have their own unique itch and work non-stop to find the solution.
This month marks the 1 year anniversary of when I founded Brainitch. This year has been a fast paced learning experience and I am super privileged to be working with some amazing young geniuses. Building Brainitch has been fun, exciting, and challenging for everyone on the team this year and I plan on keeping it that way.
I love the line from The Usual Suspects when Verbal tells the story of who Keyser Soze was: “They realized that to be in power, you didn't need guns or money or even numbers. You just needed the will to do what the other guy wouldn't.”
If you want to build a disruptive company and be “innovative,” do what your competitors are scared to do! Like in a game of chess, you need to be thinking at least 5 steps ahead in order to be successful among other experienced professionals. Anticipate what your competitors would do if they knew you were coming.
And on that note…
Come out to IMFCON/IFFS in Austin, Texas this December 7-9th where we are the Official Bluetooth Solutions Provider.
More details to come...
