“Noooo.” “ Please!” “ Stop!” The sound of screams woke you up. You bolted up in bed trying to ease your breathing.
Tears streamed down your face as flashes of your dream came to memory. Letting out a shaky breath you slowly fell back asleep. “Morning baby sister!” Danny exclaimed rushing into your office. “Hey.” You sighed peaking down at the case file on your desk. “You look like hell.” The man exclaimed taking in your fishtail braid and minimal makeup that consisted of concealer, mascara, and chapstick. “Gee thanks.” You drawled sarcasm dripping from your tone. “Here it looks like you could use a pick me up.” Your brother confirmed setting a cup of coffee on your desk. “Thank you.” The words tumbled out of your mouth as you brought the cup to your lips. “You sure you’re alright Y/N?” “Yes, Danny.” “I’m fine.” “ Don’t you have a case to go work on?” “Well…” “Danny I really need to get this done.” You dismissed him with a wave of your hand. Once he was out of your line of sight you let out a shaky breath running your hands down your face. “You’re a Reagan.” “ You need to get yourself together.” You chastised staring at the multiple pictures on your desk.
One, in particular, caught your interest. It was a picture of you and your twin brother Joe on the day you graduated from the academy. Joe had you in his arms dipping you into a dramatic pose. Erin managed to snap a picture as you squealed in terror gripping onto your brother in shock. It was one of your favorite pictures of the two of you. Tears welled in your eyes as you thought of the second birthday you’d be celebrating by yourself. “I miss you, Joey.” “ I’m sorry.” You whispered touching the photo gently. A shaky sigh hit your lips as you glanced at your phone that was going off with countless texts and phone calls. Turning your phone on silent you made your way through the empty grounds of the cemetery. The sun was just starting to rise casting a beautiful array of orange across the sky. “Hey, Joey.” You sighed running your fingers lovingly across the stone. “I brought your favorite.” Rummaging through the bag in your hand you placed a German Chocolate cupcake on the stone. With shaking hands, you put in two number three candles into the fresh pastry. The glowing candles were a large contrast to the lightening sky. “Happy 33rd Birthday big bro.” “ I love you more than you’ll ever know.” Once the candles were blown out you took the items and placed them back in the bag. “I’m so sorry Joe.” “ I really am.” The words tumbled out of your mouth as you made your way towards the cemetery entrance. Your startled squeak hit your lips as you entered your apartment about half an hour later. “Erin I’m telling you.” “ She’s not picking up her phone.” “I’ve already checked.” The sight of your big brother pacing in your living room met your line of sight.
His dark espresso eyes widened when he took in the sight of you. “She’s home.” “ I’ll talk to you later.” He exclaimed snapping the phone shut and rushing over towards you. “Where the hell have you been?” “Are you alright?” "Are you hurt?” He took in your form scanning you for any potential injuries. “Danny!” “ I’m fine relax!” “What are you even doing here?” “Nobody’s been able to get a hold of you.” “We’ve been worried sick!” “Danny it’s only seven in the morning!” You mused glancing at the watch on your wrist. “Do you blame us for being concerned?” “I could have been sleeping for all you know.” “You need to calm down.” “Don’t you dare tell me to calm down!” He snapped. “Come on lets go!” “Where are we going?” “Dad’s!” “No!” You stood your ground staring down your drama king of a brother. “Just because you decided to go all psycho cop on me doesn’t mean I need to go anywhere with you.” A squeal hit your lips as he grabbed your much smaller form throwing you over his shoulder. “DANNY!” “Danny Reagan!” “You put me down right this minute!” You screeched as he stormed through your Dad’s door a few minutes later. “As soon as I get to my gun. I swear!” You let out a huff as he set you down on one of the stools in the kitchen. The glare you sent him would have put any mob boss to shame. “DOES ANYBODY WANT TO EXPLAIN WHAT’S GOING ON?” The sound of your dad’s voice caused you to both instantly shut your mouth. “I came home only to be kidnapped against my own will.” You confirmed taking in the forms of Jamie and Erin who were staring at the two from the safety of the dining room. Your dad walked over to the two of you coffee cup in hand. He held the same firm expression you’d seen countless times as kids but his eyes twinkled with amusement. “Danny, would you mind telling me why your sister is sitting in the kitchen in handcuffs?” “Well, I couldn’t get her to settle down any other way.” Your annoying brother retorted. “That’s because bad cop over here won't take no for an answer!” You huffed trying to cross your arms to no avail. “Will somebody please take these off?” The whine that left your lips sounded so childish but you didn’t have it in you to care. Danny reached into his pocket taking off the handcuffs and slipping them into his jacket. “Thank you.” Your fingers instantly started rubbing at the angry red marks that had formed on your wrists. Thanks to your fetal attempts of trying to grab Danny’s keys while he drove. “If you handcuff me again.” “I swear I’ll dump all of your firearms into the Hudson River.” You threatened. “You wouldn’t have the nerve.” Your brother grunted. “That’s enough!” Your dad sighed rubbing at his temples. “Can any of you just go a day without trying to kill each other?” “Y/N you’re usually my reasonable peacemaker.” “I’m sorry Dad.” “It's just I don’t get why Danny has to go all psycho on me all the time.” The words tumbled from your mouth as you peaked over at your brother. He flashed you a dirty look before jumping in. “It's my job to keep an eye on you “Y/N” “You weren’t picking up your phone so I went over to check on you.” “And your car wasn’t there I got worried.” “There’s no need to protect me.” “I’m not a child.” “That’s not what I was saying.” “Then what are you saying?” “Because I know that it’s my fault Joe’s dead!” “If I had made it just a second or two sooner.” “It would have been me instead of him. I wouldn’t have had to watch as those bullets pelted through him. “I wouldn’t have had to hold my twin as he took his last breaths or call in the 10.999. “I know what my mistakes cost everyone!” “So say it Danny because I’m sick and tired of how you all look at me.” “I know those bullets were meant for me!” “ Sometimes I think it would have been better for everyone if they had! You snapped rushing out of the house and towards your grandpa’s car. You pulled out the spare key from underneath the mat before putting it in the ignition and taking off.
