Wednesday, December 6: Alchemist, “Wrapped in Guilt”
“Wrapped in Guilt” opened Tripsis and thus began the final chapter for one of the more interesting discographies in recent memory. In many ways, Alchemist set the path for the wave of progressive and technical metal acts to come out of Australia over the last 15 years, plying their trade since the early ‘90s and setting themselves apart by fusing tribal rhythms and Middle Eastern textures to death metal riffing, with Adam Agius’ idiosyncratic vocals finding an unholy convergence of Max Cavalera, Bruce Dickinson and David Vincent. But more than that, Alchemist was a uniquely original and adventurous band, and “Wrapped in Guilt” presented their capabilities in full, with John Bray and Rodney Holder delivering compelling and pummeling rhythms that were djent long before there was such a thing, while Agius’ and Roy Torkington’s guitars seemingly tried to update A Farewell to Kings for the 21st century, and succeeded gloriously. This was exactly where progressive metal needed to be in 2007, and while Alchemist disbanded around 2010, Agius fortunately decided to continue along this path when he formed The Levitation Hex a few years later.
