Rangers Sign Lance Berkman
According to Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com, the Rangers have agreed to sign Lance Berkman to a 1 yr deal worth $10 mil with a $1 mil buyout. The Rangers desperately needed a big bat and I guess this is the best that they could find. Berkman has been a solid consistent power hitter for a long time, but he is old and coming off some knee injuries. I'm not sure that he can be counted on to stay healthy, but if he does, he could really help cushion the blow (offensively) of losing Hamilton, Young, and Napoli. I've never really liked Berkman, and I don't think that will change now, but he can hit and he's versatile in that he can play the OF if needed, as well as 1B and DH...all spots that could use a little help. Hopefully we're getting the Berkman that played well for the Cardinals, and not the one that looked like he had one foot in the grave with the Yankees. Only time will tell.
Rangers and Nelly Avoid Arbitration!
John Heyman of CBSSports.com is reporting that both sides have agreed to deal. There are conflicting reports as to the exact length and terms of the deal, but at the very least both sides will avoid an arbitration hearing for at least 1yr. Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News has reported that the sides were close to inking a 2yr deal. Nelly has 2yrs of arbitration remaining, so it would make perfect sense for the Rangers to try to buy out those years. This is basically the same approach they used to sign Elvis Andrus earlier in the week. With Nelly presumably locked up (at least for a yr), that leaves only Mike Napoli unsigned for 2012. The gap between the Rangers and Nap is a fairly wide one, so I wouldn't be surprised if they do actually end up going to arbitration. I'll keep you posted as more details start to unfold.
