John Stabb of Government Issue Passes Away After Struggle with Cancer
by Dillon Price on May 8, 2016
On Saturday May 7, Government Issue‘s frontman John Stabb tragically passed away at 54 years old after struggling with stomach cancer. Government Issue was one of Washing D.C.’s hardcore-punk bands to emerge during the Dischord Records era of the early 80’s. The band went through a series of lineup changes until disbanding in 1989. Recently Government Issue has played some reunion shows.
The band gave a statement on their Facebook page early Sunday morning:
“It is with heavy hearts that we have to announce that at 7:43 p.m 5/7/16 our comrade John Stabb Schroeder lost his hard fought battle with stomach cancer. Our hearts go out to his wife Mina. Rest in Power, brother, there will never be another.”
A GoFundme campaign had recently raised over $50,000 and a benefit concert is currently happening D.C.’s Black Cat. The concert features Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore, Government Issue’s bassist J. Robbins, and D.C. psychedelic punk band GIVE.
