Consider: John, MC, and Christopher leave Prospero and start living off the grid (or rather, as much as they can with all their cybernetics) in what used to be the midwestern United States (John’s a southerner through and through, but MC and Chris put their feet down, being two people from Neo-Detroit and England).

It’s hard at first. Chris sorely and bitterly misses Prospero and frequently has breakdowns over it. John and MC lose their patience, sometimes, but they’re good at keeping each other in check. Eventually they devise a system to smuggle Christopher his meds under a new name.

MC, while happy with the arrangement, sometimes wakes up sobbing in the middle of the night, and when John’s senses them in the kitchen, they don’t have the heart to tell him that the nightmare was because of when John tortured them for days.

Eventually they pull through. MC becomes good at gardening, and while not entirely self-sustainable, MC’s garden helps them through many a winter, once they learn how to store food long term. While MC and John are both good hunters, John likes it best, and so he goes out and brings home the meat. 

This leaves Chris as the one who needs to learn how to cook by necessity, and though all three participate (just as MC hunts at times and the other two garden), that becomes his primary work. 

They eventually start earning a modest living from Chris offering his services to surrounding families (only through word of mouth--they do not want to be found), because let’s be real, healthcare in the United Empire (or its surrounding areas) probably isn’t the best, so the help with older e brains is appreciated. 

Eventually, they fall into rhythm with each other, and while, yes, they are selfish for the problem of Jim behind, Christopher managed to get the Kojima|Acetron key out before Jim could get it to the tower. While they know they may have to run someday, for now they are calm, at peace.
