ARCHAEOLOGY, Discovering the World’s Secrets: The Americas. “The Mystery of Hochelaga” Canada’s 🇨🇦 first excavation, led by McGill University’s John Dawson, was a fruitless search for the mysterious #hochelaga . This First Nation settlement was originally described by French explorer Jacques Cartier after an expedition in 1535. Yet, by 1603, the entire village had completely disappeared. Recent building development in modern-day Montreal was halted when photographer Robert Galbraith realized that the bulldozers would intrude on the edge of the site that #johndawson had excavated. 1) A depiction of #jacquescartier meeting inhabitants of Hochelaga. 2) A map of Hochelaga that was published in Jacques Cartier’s memoirs in 1534. #worldhistory #canadahistory #ancienthistory #frenchexplorers https://www.instagram.com/p/CLUuXe1r0nQ/?igshid=ttfm6hi9vaub
