Birth of John of Saint Thomas, Dominican Philosopher
On July 9, 1589, John of Saint Thomas (João Poinsot) was born in Lisbon, Portugal. A member of the Dominican Order, he became one of the most influential theologians and philosophers of the 17th century, known for his deep writings on metaphysics, theology, logic, and the works of Thomas Aquinas.
Serving as a professor and scholar in Spain, John of Saint Thomas became a leading figure in the Thomistic tradition, helping preserve and develop the ideas of Aquinas during the Catholic Counter-Reformation. His works, especially his Cursus Philosophicus and Cursus Theologicus, remained important texts in Catholic philosophy and theology for centuries.
