Mural for my friend, MC John Vietnam.
Thinking today about the great friends we've lost. When I heard the news about John Vietnam 5 years ago, I was painting in the Coke Yards of Milwaukee. Ever since then, on the anniversary, I go and find a yard or wall to paint in memory. #johnvietnam #jvn #andrewthomas #phonetic1 #NAKILA @omaifirstwave (at Writerz Blok)
"We Need Change, But Change Starts With You. We Gotta Work On Ourselves, Even Though I Know That's Hard To Do." During this week, all the IFPers have been bombarded with this constant question of "What made you decide to, what made you interested, why are you here?" This type of self reflection was extremely difficult for some of us because how could we just choose on experience or one person that affected us in such of a way that drove us to this exact moment. Like some of my peers, I felt that I needed to switch up my answer and choose a different experience. You have to give credit where credit is due. So, for me, this is my personal shout out the one and only John "Vietnam" Nguyen. I know I'm not alone when it comes to citing him as an inspiration. It's a hard subject to even think about because he was an influential member of the community, yet died so young. Again, it's difficult to even begin to describe exactly what impact he made on me because I didn't know him as many as others. I realized I listen to his songs a lot more now and I acknowledge that in his albeit short life, his ability to uplift and serve his community is only one reason why so many people became attracted to his story. I think about this song in particular and I realize that it's a constant reminder for myself to do good work. Continue to improve. You might not change the world in a second, a verse, or even a year. But, if we cannot let that burden fall on one person. With gathering my thoughts, I just want to ask everyone kindly to keep trying to make an impact, even if it's a small one. We should start with working on ourselves and be the best change we can all be proud of. Oh, and listen to more John Vietnam Peace
