5. Almond Hash at Almond Restaurant in Manhattan Almond Hash is probably one of the best brunch items I have ever had in NYC. Basically, it is something like corned beef hash - but instead of corned beef, they used duck... As the menu describes it - duck confit, roasted onions, potatoes and duck cracklins. To make this even better it comes with two poached eggs and toasted french bread. The duck was perfectly cooked - not too dry, and not too much skin (just the right amount). The potatoes and onions were not overly seasoned allowing the flavor of the duck to really come through. The soft poached eggs were almost a garnish on this delicious "duck hash" and the soft yolks really blended well with the potatoes and meat. 4. Tiebuu Jeun and Fataya Djeun at Joloff Restaurant in Brooklyn Joloff is an African restaurant specializing in Senegalese food, and is quite honestly the best Senegalese I have ever had - and I have tried a few, including restaurants in Harlem's Little Senegal. Tiebuu Jeun is the national dish of Senegal! It's a spiced baked fish served with some vegetables and your choice of either cous cous or joloff rice. I recommend the joloff rice (if you have never had it, its basically a traditional rice served in many African countries. Its somewhat spicy and a somewhat reddish brown color from the spices they use. It's not like the thick American rice, more of a smaller grain of basmati). The fish itself was a white fish that was well seasoned and spiced with some gravy. AMAZING. The other amazing dish at this restaurant is the Fataya Djeun which is basically a fried samosa filled with fish. Incredible. While the fish is spiced, there is still a strong fish flavor - but it's SOOO good. Also, this restaurant is really reasonably priced, and also plays some really lovely African music.
