Long time camp friends Rosalind Jenkins and Mary-Martin France Nicholson started dreaming up the idea of Hilltop Shoppe after many summers at camp standing in line to receive a “happy” from home. In 2017 they made that dream a reality and opened up shoppe in New Orleans, Louisiana on Magazine Street.

Interview - Boy & Bear

Leading up to the Bonnaroo Music Festival, Suburban Roads is interviewing artists who will be appearing at the fest. Our next interview in this year’s series is with Boy & Bear, performing on 6/12. Check out our other Bonnaroo artist interviews here.

Cathy: Boy & Bear will be playing Bonnaroo on Sunday, June 12th. In the form of a haiku, how are you feeling about your Bonnaroo debut? Jon: To be honest I don't know what a haiku is, but I've tried… We're looking forward to being there and having a good show we hope

C: You’ll be performing the afternoon of the last day of the festival. Are you planning on coming in early to catch some other band’s performances, or just pop in on the day of your set? If you’re planning on lingering around the fest, who do you want to see while you’re there? J: Unfortunately because of our schedule we just get in and play on the day of our set. It's a shame because there are so many cool bands playing. It'd be great to see Father John Misty, Mavis Staples, Kurt Vile and also Brett Dennen (not necessarily in that order!) and also our mate from Australia, Jarryd James.

C: What are your favorite places to perform live? Do you tend to prefer the festival setting, or do lean toward more intimate settings? J: I think it varies. Festivals are great because there is a certain looseness that comes from not having had a soundcheck or any preparation like that. More importantly, there are people there who've never seen your music before and you are always trying to have more people watching you at the end than there were at the start. Whereas at your own show, people are mostly there to see you and you have more control over how things look and sound, so that's cool too. I don't know, I like mixing it up. Usually after a festival run you crave your own shows and vice versa.

C: Boy & Bear’s latest album, Limit of Love, was released last fall. Now that you’ve had a chance to tour on the album fairly extensively, are there any songs you’ve been enjoying playing live more than others? What songs have fans been gravitating more to at shows? J: I love playing a song called “Showdown” off Limit of Love...and actually also the title track itself. The grooves on the new record feel really natural to us, and the songs have played themselves live in a way that didn't necessarily happen on previous albums.

C: You worked with producer Ethan Johns on Limit Of Love. From what I can tell based on other interviews you’ve done, this was a very positive thing for both the band and the shaping of the record. Given the experience, do you think you will continue to work with him on future releases? J: It's hard to tell at this point. I think we'd love to work with Ethan again, but it'll depend on the direction of the new album and schedules and all those things coming together.

C: With 3 albums under your belt and an extensive history with touring, it’s safe to say you have significant experience in dealing with the music industry. That being said, if you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be and why? J: I don't know. We don't have too much to complain about, but we do have one of those typical signing to a major label and getting dropped before the record even got put out stories. I think monetizing anything creative is awkward. But then I believe it should be worth something, so seeing music get treated as something that should be available for free is tough for me. But I'm a dinosaur. I still have a vinyl and CD collection and I have never used a streaming service. One of the upsides is taking the control of what is out there away from major labels, I think that's a positive.

C: If you were trapped on a deserted island but had the chance to have 3 items of your choice with you, what would they be and why? J: I don't know, in thinking about it, I realized how useless most things I have would be. I'd take my surfboard, my photo collection, and my swiss army knife!
