It just frustrates me a lot that we have so much varied and new Trek content now to enjoy but certain people are just being so dismissive, insulting, and condescending about it.
I got into Star Trek at the tail end of Voyager and the beginning of Enterprise, and before I knew it, Star Trek had come to an end in a way that seemed to say it was done. That it was gonna just be another page in the annals of history. So many things that I had wanted seemed a far off dream that I simply accepted was never going to happen, the idea of a Captain Pike show being one of them.
But then came the Kelvin timeline and with it birthed this new era of Star Trek shows, each one so distinct and unique with its own style and voice that carried on the Trek legacy to new fans and new generations. A new era that not only expands Trek to new frontiers, new representations, and new stories, but also give new context to stories of the past in interesting and powerful ways. Trek is alive and thriving again and I just don’t get all the whining that has come with it.
And when it comes to Strange New Worlds, maybe I feel protective of the show, but I have been waiting for OVER TWO DECADES for this show. I have wanted it to happen since I was a 9 year old kid watching The Menagerie Part 1 and Part 2. And I have spent decades thinking that it’ll never happen because Pike is a footnote in the history of an over 50 year old franchise. But Discovery gave this character new life, it gave his Enterprise crew a much needed modern update and created new relationships and stories that can be explored. And myself and so many others worked hard on petitions and Twitter campaigns to make this show come into being. It’s not just some “cheap cash grab” that CBS made to say “oh look it’s still Star Trek and oh look Spock!”. This show exists solely because of the fans fighting for it and because Discovery created more interesting narratives to explore with these characters performed by an absolute goldmine of brilliant recasting. If Leonard Nimoy had still been alive, he would have been proud of Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn, and especially Ethan Peck.
There are still so many stories to be told, so why not tell it? Why close off avenues of stories that can explore what Trek wasn’t able to explore so many decades before?
Leonard Nimoy said this when Star Trek 2009 came out and it bears repeating:
“Open your mind! Be a ‘Star Trek’ fan and open your mind and say, ‘Where does Star Trek want to take me now’.”

I'll be sure to! And that sounds really cool! : ) I have morning classes those days too. 8-10, and I usually have to get there an hour early. Not fun on those days lol.

And I drive from freaking Murrieta so it’s soooooooo hard to get there on time.
