Captain John Paul Jones's Interpretation of the American Flag, as Described by Ben Franklin (C. 1779)
from /r/vexillology Top comment: \*NOTE\* I forgot to add that Benjamin Franklin wrote the description with John Adams Historical Context: John Paul Jones was a Captain in the Continental Navy during the American Revolution who commanded several different ships throughout his career. While overseas he captured the British ship H.M.S. Serapis, but his original ship sank. He wanted to dock the Serapis in a Dutch port but he needed an ensign, so he quickly drafted an "American Flag" based on his interpretation of how Benjamin Franklin and John Adams described what the American flag should look like.
