“pleaseeee! read that book! i'm begging you!” jongseob pleads.
“jongseob, you know i love you but you also know i hate that genre, wait…” your brows furrow when you look down the hill. “what the hell is that…”
“what?” jongseob comes behind you to peek on what was happening, “what the fuck…”.
frightened and furious screams echo through the street, people running, cars banging, a siren beeps once, twice, uncountable times… and creatures with blood soaking clothes running after people. their skin was grey and they'd make terrible sounds when they reached their prey.
“are those…”
“fucking zombies.”
“we need to get out of here now.” you quickly grab his hand and start running with pure desperation in your bodies.
you thankfully find a building, but the main doors were locked. you're moved by sheer terror as you hear jongseob banging on the door to let you in. by looking around, you see a close by abandoned building that seemed to be accessible. “we can't get in here!” you tell jongseob and grab his arm again, running to the building.
when you arrive there, you go up by a ladder that seemed to be forgotten on the floor, making a long and terrifying way to the top.
you take shelter in a maintenance area in the roof. it was cramped, but safe. you're trembling, thinking that a date to go see the sunset with your boyfriend has ended in a way you could never possibly imagine.
this shouldn't take long, scientists would figure this out. you're both terrified but sure that help is going to come.
“they're not coming.”
jongseob takes a stick from the floor and starts drawing on it. “we need to leave. there's not enough food for the next month and they seem to be getting more aggressive.”
the picture he was drawing turns out to be a map of the area you were currently in. jongseob circles on a part of it that seemed to be far away from where you were. “the mountains, the zombies probably don't go there.”
“have you lost your mind?! that seems to be a three hours way by walking if we're careful, how are we gonna do that?” you question angrily.
“there are a lot of stuff we can take to defend ourselves. it should be fine if we go this way. when we got up, the doors to the building were locked from the inside, but now we can just unlock them! we don't have to go down with the ladder. there are places we can stop by. right here, is the convenience store we used to buy ice cream. and here… the alley we'd go to when we snuck out to make out, remember it has a door?” he circles every place with the stick that was almost bruising his hand.
“and if we arrive at these damn mountains and find out the zombies do go there? we don't know anything, jongseob.”
“would you rather stay here? we need to try.”
“they don't stumble, they run. you're gonna have to be fast, okay? don't slack off.” he throws a backpack that was once white on before tearing apart a piece of his shirt and tying his hair with it.
“we'll be okay.” he whispers to you when he sees your eyes watering and your hands shaking. “you've been brave until now. it's not the time to breakdown! we have to do this. we can do this.” he hands you a broken piece of metal you managed to tear out of the ladder.
at this time, it was like the fear from these past hours came down at you. you felt terrified and you could barely move. when jongseob puts his cold hand to your left cheek, you're reminded of his presence, and how you want to do this for him, how you want to make all of you guys’ dreams come true, how you can't stand seeing him suffer this much again, how you want him to have his happy ending.
“let's do it.”
the door opens and the strong smell of blood fills your senses. each step you walked down made the noises of the creatures get even louder. your grip tightens on the piece of metal instinctively as you look at your side and see that the door to the restroom of the building was slightly open. inside, a figure of a man in teared down office clothes, his back facing you while his head was swinging left and right.
you froze. jongseob takes your hand in his and signals for you to be silent. you both try to make your way quietly, but the sound of both of your matching bracelets clicking together caught the creature's attention. he immediately turns his head into your direction, his face disfigured, eyes white and empty. he fastly makes his way to you after a guttural noise.
by instinct, you push jongseob behind you and hit the man's face with the improvised weapon, making him fall all the way down the stairs. the sound made you want to throw up. when you reach the ground floor, you see him again, splashed on the ground. “don't look, just keep walking.” jongseob says, and you do it.
the way to the convenience store was easier than you thought. you walked through the most lightened ways where zombies wouldn't dare go through, hiding behind cars when a brave one would appear.
you arrive at the store right before the sunset, locking the door with a broom and using wet tissues to block the vision through the glass doors. the smell of dust annoyed you and there was no energy, no light.
“there's barely food here.” jongseob says.
“it's enough. we'll go out tomorrow morning, right?” you ask.
“yeah. let's just… rest, okay?” he sits down by your side, laying your head on his shoulder and opening the only bag of chips he was able to find there, wanting you both to share.
“do you think our friends and relatives are alive?” you ask as you eat.
“i don't know. and i don't want to think about it. we're here, aren't we? let's focus on that now.” he places a kiss to your forehead.
“do you ever think about going somewhere very far away?” you ask again.
“what's with these random questions all of a sudden?” he opens a can of soda and hands it over to you. “i guess i started thinking more about it after all this shit happened” he answers with a chuckle.
“where would you like to go?”
“somewhere with a nice beach so we can walk on the sand every evening.”
“and read a book in the balcony while listening to the sea?”
“of course.”
“i'll take you somewhere like that if we get out of here.”
the first rays of sun hit through the paper covered glass and you know it's time to go. you gather everything the store had that could possibly help and put it inside your bag.
“i love you” he holds your face with both hands and kisses you before letting go and opening the door.
the city wasn't the same. abandoned cars blocked the streets, making it even harder than it had to be. your plan was simple, get to the alley so you could spend another night and then go to the mountains the other day. but the reality was so much harder than any imagination.
a gang of what should be more than twenty of them surrounds you both as soon as you arrive at the alley. the knife you got from the store is firm in your hand as they come running for you. you try to stop them at first, but that tiny knife wasn't going to do any harm to all of them. suddenly, the alley that used to be a place of sweet memories between you two, turned into a nightmare. “run!” jongseob yells and that's what you both do. you don't look behind, you can't think of anything. all you can do is hear jongseob encouraging you to run faster.
you look back just to make sure that he was right behind you. you could see the mountains from there, you were almost there.
all of a sudden, a noise, someone falling on the ground. you look back and see the worst scene you've ever seen in your entire life. jongseob, with an infected man thrown upon him.
you stop in your tracks and yell for him, starting to go back and try to help him out, but he didn't let you. “no! keep running, please.” his face had agony all over it as he kept trying to fight for his life. the man on top of him had drool and blood dripping onto jongseob's face and with a sudden movement, he bites jongseob right in the arm.
the time stops for you. you could see the way his teeth closed in your love's skin, and that was the last time you heard his voice, “run. don't look back. live for me.”
jongseob gets up from the floor and blocks the way of every other zombie with his body, not letting them get to you. you could see the exact moment his pure eyes turned white and empty.
you wanted to give up there, you wanted to become a zombie too and live a happy zombie life with him, but his words stuck to you, “live for me”. and as tears blur your eyes, you turn around and keep running.
eight years later.
you shake the sand out of your feet and the door to your house opens with a creak. the empty ice cream pot left on the table from last night made you sigh as you pick it up and throw it away. the tv forgotten on plays an eight years anniversary special to the tragedy, mourning the victims and showing how the scientists came with the solution for the virus. you don't pay attention to it though, it's in the past.
making your way out of the shower, you take a book from the shelf and open the door to the balcony, the sound of the sea immediately reaches your ears as you sit on the small brown swing net.
your fingers slide to open the book where you stopped and when you flip to the next page, there's a little note that seemed to be carefully sticked on it. you bring it close to your eyes so you could read to know that it said,
“if you found this, it means you're almost done reading the book i told you to read! great job! always remember that i love you, hehe ♡
