Jorge Pomar: SMILE OR DIE
(scroll down for english version) Bawimy się kolorami. Układamy je w różnych konfiguracjach tworząc flagi. Traktujemy to poważnie. Możemy zdefiniować obszar i tworzyć narody. On, który jest inny, musi zostać wyeliminowany, zanim On wyeliminuje nas.

We play with colors. We arrange them in different positions, thus creating flags. We take the game seriously. We define a territory and create nations. As there are other territories different from ours, we fear they will invade us, so we buy weapons to defend ourselves. As we don’t know when they’ll invade us, we anticipate and attack first, thus initiating the conflict. This is the "game" being waged in the world every day. A "game" in which powerful nations, and others that are less so, invest a big part of their gross domestic product (approximately 1.8 billion dollars) in the weapons industry for defense (and attack) generating an aesthetic of violence. An aesthetic as a feeling of constant violence. A sensation that affects millions of bodies and, visibly, endorses wars and extermination. He who is different must be eradicated before he can eliminate us. Through the banalization of evil, Jorge Pomar questions this aesthetic of violence and makes the case that the tensions human beings live with in a world where weapons and murder are stylized with the purpose of being incorporated into our logic of consumption. Are war and play antagonic notions? Is war the game of the mighty? Is it okay to kill and to die in the name of a flag that in the end is just an arbitrary arrangement of colors? Does the concept of territory, or nation, justify the death of other? Written by Enzo Campos Córdoba
