The Missing Boy
"Is it much further?" "Yes, my lad. Not much further now." The young man led the boy through the tunnels under the temple. It would be a few hours before anyone noticed he was gone. Plenty of time. As they reached the opening he led the boy to the circle carved into the middle of the floor. "What is this on the floor?" The man smiled down at him. "It's a special ritual circle for the Lord. It's very old. That's why the temple was built on top of it. It has very powerful magic. Can you feel it?" The boy looked around at the runes pervading the circle, and then to his hands. "Not really." The man patted him on the shoulder. "Try laying down and closing your eyes. Often we cannot feel arcane energies when we try to, only when we're relaxed." The boy did as he was told. Turning around, the man went to his desk across the room and removed a long, curved ritual knife covered in cloth from a drawer. He returned to the boy who remained motionless on the floor. The boy smiled a little. "I can feel it! It's like a warm humming!" The man gave a wicked grin. "You see? It's amazing the things you can miss when you don't stop take a moment to listen every now and then." The boy didn't even feel the knife at first. It was so sharp that it wasn't until it had pierced his heart that he realized what had happened. "Hrk...guh..." was all he could muster before he felt the room start to go cold. The vibration intensified. As his eyes began to close and his consciousness left him he heard just a small amount of the man's chanting. "Y'ga nar sar'kthan...megdleb cthar'sun...un'kanadneb kethiss sar'kthan" The man looked down at the lifeless body of the boy. As he withdrew the ritual knife he saw as the runes inscribed upon it drew the life force of the boy into the hilt. The blood pooling beneath the body slowly trickled into the runes of the sacrificial circle. As it progressively filled in the glowing intensified until it was almost too bright to stare at directly. The man looked down at the circle and held his hand out over the body of the small boy, and offered up the chant again. "Y'ga nar sar'kthan...megdleb cthar'sun...un'kanadneb kethiss sar'kthan" The runes flickered violently and the boy's body was rapidly consumed seemingly by an unseen wraith until only a dry husk remained. "Soon."
