hot take but hostiles (2017) would be so much better if they didn’t do That with the romantic plot between rosalee and joseph.
first of all, having the two white leads be the ones who survive and are relevant until the end (shoutout to them for not killing corporeal henry tho that scene in the hospital was one of the best in the film) is, uh, racist. killing off all the native americans to get them to the point where rosalee and joseph can end up with a ~romantic future and a new adopted son in the form of little bear, who’s MAJORLY ripped off by the whole ordeal and ends up being taken away from his culture and is implied to be raised by these white people, at least one of whom was VIOLENTLY racist toward his people until a few days ago, is racist. none of the cheyenne people were really developed as characters, and we spent the precious time we did have seeing rosalee and joseph finding each other or w/e. it sucked.
second, rosalee is MASSIVELY TRAUMATIZED. she witnessed the death of her entire family, including her husband, within that week! not to mention all the deaths she saw while they were on the road. she was definitely strong, definitely a survivor, but she’s completely traumatized and seeking death through the whole film. not to mention that she gets raped on top of all her other trauma. WHY give her a romantic plot with that.
personally, i would have preferred, if they had to shoehorn in some romance, for something to have come up with living woman (the chief’s daughter). first of all, seeing the cheyenne as something other than some stoic ‘noble savage’ archtype would be a departure for the film. i’m hesitant to put her in that role considering, again, how massively and violent racist joseph is, and the plot would probably have to change in some serious ways to use that instead of the rosalee/joseph storyline. maybe there’s not even an on-screen romance, but at least a mutual respect (that does eventually build in the movie anyway, although while his perception of the cheyenne as a whole is affected it’s more with her father specifically, at least in the way we see it) could have built. i also think that they should have been the last ones alive (if they were insistent on the ‘kill-em-all’ ending which kind of fucking massively sucked considering we watched all of the natives whose homecoming has been the entire POINT OF THE FILM die for rosalee and joseph’s ending)
which leads me to my next point: if anyone had to die, it should have been rosalee. it would have made sense. she’s been wanting to die since her family did. it would bring the film in a full circle, in a sense; i think she would probably be smiling as she went, and that could have been a much more powerful scene than the one we’re left with. she doesn’t have a place in the ending as we see it. joseph taking in little bear would at least show the extent to which he’s changed, and the way he’s going to have to continue to work toward redemption while raising this kid. for rosalee, he’s.... what, a replacement child? him leaving with her doesn’t make sense in the first place, in my opinion; she doesn’t speak cheyenne, and there’s no indication he speaks english. what’s she going to be able to do for him?
if rosalee died, the last scene could have been back at her farm, another grave dug next to the others. she made him promise that when she died, she’d be buried there, and then we didn’t get anything out of that. it ties up ‘loose ends,’ in a sense.
and if joseph and living woman (living! woman! it’s in her name!) were the last survivors, her taking in her nephew would make sense. they’re each other’s last family. we could see their shared grief, instead of watching all the cheyenne die and little bear being used as a prop for the final ‘happy’ ending for the white leads. then, if the film wasn’t content to let them go their separate ways, there could be a sense of solidarity between joseph and living woman, not any actual romance but maybe a hint that one could be possible eventually, or not, just a sense of respect, and maybe he goes with them. nothing left for him back west, right?
just. anything other than the rosalee/joseph plot. please.

Joseph Blocker Arrested After Son Found Dead, Injured In Washing Machine
GARLAND, TX – Joseph Blocker has been charged with the murder of his 4-year-old son after the boy was found dead at his home and possibly took a ride in a running washing machine.
According to reports, Joseph Blocker, 28, called police from his home on Dec 9 to report his son was unconscious. When first responders arrived at the home, they found the 4-year-old already dead.
A medical examiner later determined that injuries found on the boy were consistent with being inside a running washing machine. A front loading washing machine was inside the home and, well, it doesn’t start all by itself.
“From what we know about the washing machine … that door has to be shut, and then someone has to push a button on the outside to get that started,” said police spokesman Officer Joe Harn. “It does not start by automatically shutting that door.”
Blocker was arrested at the scene and has now been charged with one count of capital murder, He is currently being held on $500,000 bond. Blocker has previous arrests for driving while intoxicated and possession of marijuana.
Whatever happened to that kid, it must have been violent. Neighbor Luz Juarez was there when police arrived at the home and said Blocker’s hands appeared to be streaked with blood. Investigators are still trying to determine the boy’s exact cause of death.
