“KOREATOWN”
by Joseph Lee
When I die, I’m a god Paint me large, On the wall Mural mural on the wall (On the wall) May this legend never fall (Never never fall) . . . —Dumbfounded, Murals
If you were in Koreatown in Los Angeles in June, 2016 you might have caught Dumbfounded shooting a video for his new song, “Murals.” As a child of the ‘90s Dumbfounded tells a haunting tale of racial violence and riots in Los Angeles appropriately set against the backdrop of a Korean-owned liquor store. Catalina Liquor at 8th St. and Catalina also provides an important canvas for Joseph Lee who completes this portrait of Dumbfounded over the course of the video, at the end of the day serving as a shrine to victims of ‘92. Saatchi Art describes the portraits of self-taught artist Lee as exploring “his never-ending fascination of true and primal emotions behind societal ‘masks.’” @joeyunlee @dumbfounded @scenesfromthesidewalk
