The patter of Leslie's shuffle was so familiar, Ruvik didn'tneed to look up to know it was him. "Leslie.I trust you're ready for the experiment."
Leslie shifted restlessly, nodding. His usual shyness was tinged with anxiety,and when Ruvik finally looked up from his station, he noticed a bruisedarkening beneath his eye. Hefrowned. "Who did that toyou?"
Leslie didn't reply, but he kept still when Ruvik reachedout, drawing his thumb gently over the mark, and his fidgeting ceased. Helooked somehow grateful.
I'll find whoever thiswas, Ruvik thought, and kill them forthis.
