I've always wantes to visit Japan, but with any international travel, I'm always worried about the language barrier. Not being able to read anything or ask anyone questions. How was your trip in that regard, did you have ant struggles/successes? Hope you had a marvelous time regardless!
For the most part it was vary straight forward! Since English is most commonly used in international context, most places had a lot of signage information in English, and of course Google Translate can give you basic concepts. That said, there were a lot of situations where you needed to communicate directly with a person, and it is in those situations that being good at judging context and tone are very important. We also tried to choose restaurants that were a bit more English friendly, or had pictures we could point to. For a few restaurants we got shuffled off into the corner because we were hard to communicate with, and definitely some places had signs that said “Japanese Only”.
