August 18, 2023 - GVSU
I write this just after a trip down memory lane. My very first year at college was at Grand Valley State University, or GVSU for short. It was the first time I was away from home. I failed that first year. I flunked both semester. Had to move back home. Start over again at Community college. But lets not talk about the sad times. Instead, I want to reminisce about the good things.
I stayed in a first floor dorm room. We had a very small window at the tip top of our room, on account of the room being 3/4 into the ground. My dorm mate was named Josh. He was amazing. I got incredibly lucky with how awesome of a roommate I got. We would talk a lot. We would hang out and play video games or watch Game of Thrones (we binged the entire series). I have many found memories of conversating over nothing with him. We haven't talked since then. I should reach out.
In the first week of school beginning, we got hit with a tornado warning. I vividly remember stumbling into the main area of the dorm building and seeing a bunch of college kids aimlessly standing around. None of us, not even the RAs, knew what to do. We just watched the TV news until we got bored and then went back to our rooms. I guess we didn't care. It was an exciting, and in hindsight foreshadowing, event. It was an intense storm too.
Nearly every night I would walk around campus. Not going anywhere, just walking. There as a little walking path area that I would circle for over and over. I also enjoyed the walking by and admiring the Tower. I still see it in my dreams from time to time. Foreboding, but impressive. Ironically, I did not like walking to class. My dorm and the classrooms were on opposite sides of campus. I hated walking in the cold moorings. I did not like trekking that path for class, but loved it for aimless walking.
This last one isn't too much of a happy memory. Its heavy. One night, while doing my usual late night sandwich intake and scrolling social media, I came across a post that stopped my heart dead. A report of an active shooter at UofM. My home is near there. Most of my high school classmates are there. I cannot describe the fear that gripped me in that moment. Pure panic. At first, I didn't even move, instead staring at the post and rereading it over and over and over. I dropped my sandwich and left. I practically ran to my dorm room. I turned on police radio, informed Josh, and began doom scrolling. I remember calling my parents at one point as well. Tears. Thankfully, it was not real. Apparently, some kids were popping balloons and screaming. Pop and scream. American school kids have learned that sound well. Some immediately ran upon hearing the sound, which led to a cascade of all the others following suit. People barricaded themselves in. Chairs stacked on doors. Cops were called. But thankfully, it was misinterpretation. Nothing changed while I was in high school, Nothing has changed while I'm in college. But it will eventually.
On a happier note, I discovered a lot of good music then. The highlight was Post Malone. Specially, his new-ish album BeerBongs and Bentleys. I fell in love. That album was my anthem.

What did we do?
In week 8 we discussed what equality and diversity means, the legislation and how to embed equality and diversity into teaching.
To begin with the tutor read a story out loud to the whole group and we each were given a sheet with some statements on it. For example, ‘the builder was driving a van’ and we had to tick whether this was true or false according to the story the tutor read. This was a great exercise to get us thinking about stereotypes. The tutor then went through the whole passage and all the statements were ‘don’t know. This showed that we are all prone to stereotype.
We then went through the learning outcomes and ground rules and set some additional ones.
We were then asked the question; ‘what comes to mind when you think about equality and diversity’? Individually we had to write out thoughts on the white board.
In pairs we discussed examples of stereotyping, and or/ if when we have stereotyped other people and or / if to provide an example of when we have been stereotyped.
The question ‘where do prejudices come from’ was posed to us. Some of the suggestions were; media, parents, fear, experiences, self preservations, and lack of education/ ignorance.
We then discussed what this leads to when in action which is discrimination. Discrimination occurs when an individual is treated less favourably than another or if they treated differently. We then went onto discuss prejudice + power = discrimination. When we have power we have more opportunities to discriminate.
We then discussed anti- discriminatory practises. As a tutor we should always challenge discrimination and it is a role and responsibility of a tutor. We should as tutors, actively pro actively and positively challenge discrimination. We then went through the legislation before 2010 which only had 6 protected characteristics and then looked at the additional 3 added to the Equality Act in 2010.
We then worked in groups to discuss how we would include and protect the 9 characteristics to promote equality and make it inclusive.
We looked at teaching methods and management of the group. We were then asked as a whole group who we though were powerful people or sources which the tutor wrote on the while board, and some of the following were suggestions;
- Government
- Politicians
- Nurses
- Parents / media
- Royal family
- Pop stars/ footballers
- Religious leaders
We then did an equality and diversity exercise where we looked at how we could as tutors or organisations make the course more accessible and here are some of the heading we looked at;
- Advertising and pre-course publicity
- Location, room layout and physical environment
- Teaching methods and management of the group
- Recourses
- Other
We then worked in pairs to explore how power can be used to empower learners and do you agree you have power as a tutor. I and my pair partner both agreed we have power as a tutor.
We then looked at the power me model the challenge continuum. In little groups of three’s we were given a scenario to work from and then had to discuss where on the challenge continuum we would challenge this issue.
How did I feel? What did I learn and/ or find useful?
I really enjoyed the session on equality and diversity. I learned a lot. Stereotyping is a cognitive tool. Equality – protected from negative where as Diversity – positivity of differences, positive and different attributes.
I learned and found useful the additional 3 protected characteristics which were; gender re-assignment, martial/civil partnership status and pregnancy and maternity. I also found useful the different types of power model and how the power can shift. In addition, I learned and found useful the challenge continuum and how to apply it and the different levels. It was useful to know low levels are effective challenges.
How will I apply that learning in my own teaching role?
I would as a tutor apply this in my teaching as I would not discriminate any students and if a student felt discriminated against by another class member I would challenge the discrimination and follow the correct procedures.

I'm finding it so incredibly hard to walk the talk I've been talking my entire life. There's a part of me that wants to be selfish about this.... But there's a part of me that knows that it's not just about me anymore. It's amazing how things happen when we are least expecting them. Friday will be interesting.
i have this really bad habit of letting my mind run wild to dark and irrational places. i’m usually able to think myself out of it. but the road from winding myself up to calm, rational, more realistic thinking is terrible.
my anxiety doesn’t help. it is probably what fuels this terrible, exhausting, stressful fire.
i really want to see a therapist, but i can’t afford it right now.
i hope to get this sorted out someday, i feel like the lows get too low sometimes. sometimes dangerously low.
