I'm still not sure whether I actually liked this book! A few weeks sgo I went to the mightily impressive Picasso exhibition at Tate Modern, a retrospective of his wildly prolific and and creative year of wonder, 1932, and this book happened to be in the gift shop, an infamous novel published the same year. I'd actually not heard of the book nor of the author, but my brother-in-law had by chance just sent me a copy, so expectations were high. However the 400+ pages of the journeys of such a misanthrope was tough going. In parts it no doubt reminded me of of Voltaire, Swift, Conrad, Burgess, Dostoevsky etc with it's first-person recount of struggles through wars, colonial empires, and seafaring to new worlds and back home to France again, biut the man's distate for humanity and mistreatment of women was just all a little bit too much for me.
