Tim Drake has a way of disarming storms.
Not the kind that break the sky open, but the ones that live under your ribs, that coil tight and sharp over nothing at all. You come home drenched, rain still clinging to your clothes like it followed you inside on purpose. The world tipped just enough to send you spiraling. The door shuts too hard. Your voice rises too fast. Everything feels unfair in that small, catastrophic way only bad days know how to be.
You don’t ask for comfort. You just unravel.
Tim doesn’t stop you. He opens his arms.
You fold into him, words spilling, hands clenched in his shirt, heart thudding like it’s trying to outrun itself. He smells like warm laundry and books and calm. He holds you without comment, without correction and counting the seconds in the quiet way he does. Lets the wave crest.
Thirty seconds. Maybe a few more.
Then, gently he says, “Your brain’s just overwhelmed.”
You lift your head, still frowning, ready to defend your chaos. But he’s already smiling, that soft, focused smile he gets when he’s about to explain something he loves.
“Stress stacks,” he murmurs. “Little things pile up, and then one tiny trigger — like the rain — pushes your nervous system past its threshold. It’s chemistry, not failure.”
His voice is calm, measured. A slow current. He talks about hormones and sensory overload and how bodies sometimes choose drama over logic because they’re tired. His hands move as he speaks, tracing invisible diagrams in the air, eyes bright in that quietly brilliant way that always undoes you.
Somewhere between neurotransmitters and homeostasis, the tightness in your chest loosens. The anger fades. Not dismissed, not mocked, just understood. Given a name. Given a reason.
“So,” you say softly, “I’m not losing it.”
He smiles. “Not even a little.”
You sink back into him, cheek against his shoulder. The rain taps against the windows, no longer personal, no longer cruel. Just weather.
Tim presses a kiss to your hair, still talking, still gentle. You let his voice carry you down, steady and patient, until the storm inside you quiets to a drizzle.
You should be annoyed. You were ready to be furious all evening.
But you’re warm. And held. And listening to the man you love explain the universe until everything makes sense again.
