While clan rivalry is a factor in the Jubbaland region’s conflict, it is hard to ignore Kenya’s indiscriminate bombings that often harm civilians in the regions inhabited by the Marrehan clan as an issue that needs to be publicly addressed to respect and regain the confidence of local communities. Under the Kenyan leadership in Kismayo, Marrehan members became a target for the newcomers. Their men were killed, women raped, and property confiscated. For Kenya’s mission in Somalia to succeed, all the locals must be equal stakeholders in this endeavour, and it has to re-engage the Marehan locals, re-assess its overall strategy in Somalia, and pursue legal channels to punish those who have misled it or else face the nightmare of dealing with a hurt warrior clan that’s known for its modesty and vengeance.
