I just remembered that i have an opened jug of bottom-shelf wine in the fridge - it’s been in there for about two weeks, I wonder if it’s still good
I spotted a couple of customers looking at the Geriatrics Aisle: Wine coolers, boxed wine, Arbor Mist, cheap jug wine and the like. One of them came up to me.
Customer: I got a question for you. I see all these wines that are pear and peach and cherry flavored. How come there’s never any grape flavored wine?
Me for three hours: …
AFTER THE FAMILY
An older version does an impression of a younger version of me in an acid green woman's blouse and my dad's boxer shorts
pours chardonnay from a jug into a red plastic cup sits on a lawn chair in the carport sip-summoning calm before dusk wonders what happened mind on the wind
what happened?
What have you been drinking lately?
I consider myself an avid fan of wine. I work in the restaurant world and everyday I get ask hundreds of questions that run the gamit from how's the soup to what should I drink with my meal. Most of these questions are fairly simple to answer and I respond with a smile and move on. There is one inquiry that always stops me dead in my tracks, "what have you been drinking lately?" Then the silence becomes deafening.
So why is a fairy boring and simple question such a stumper? Why does it turn me from an educated and charming ;) person into a bumbling idiot? I cannot for the life of me figure out the proper response.
I think the issue lies not in the depths of my soul or my palate. I think the matter at hand stems from the person asking the question. A million different things flash through my mind. What is this person drinking, what will they think if I say White Zinfandel just to get a laugh? Do they know what Cote Rotie is? Can I really explain that even though they refuse to drink Merlot, their preciuos Bordeaux contains that "dreaded" varietal?
Sadly I resign myself to answering vaguely and look at them and say, "a lot of stuff similar to what you have in your glass". Then I take a look down and notice the bottle of Carlo Rossi! Arrivederci to all self respect and any credibilty I might have had prior to this little interlude.
So friends, what have you been drinking? Really.....would you like to join me for a glass of jug Burgundy? I hear it ages slower in the 4L format. Cheers!
