adelaide asking whether there’s someone to stop the doctor juxtaposed next to donna’s introductory episode where she asserts “you need someone to stop you.” the implication that donna more than anyone was always meant to be that person, could have been that person, but her mind was destroyed when she tried to be that person. the fact that rose and martha stopped the doctor by virtue of being people he had to take care of and think about but donna was the one who wanted to be his equal and it destroyed her. if he takes on another rose, another martha, she’ll grow up and move on eventually. if he takes on another donna, her desire to be Like Him will cannibalize her, because no one else can be a time lord. this is his way of coping. he wants to make and unmake the world to punish it for isolating him.
