Caring for the birds on Christmas in Norway: ‘Julenek,’ a Norwegian tradition
It’s good to remember all wild creatures this season; and birds are an important part of Christmas in Norway. In Norway on Christmas Eve, sheaves of wheat or oats are decorated with a red bow and are tied to a post or hung on the door, to feed the birds on Christmas morning, which is and has been a symbol of Christmas in Norway for many years. The Norwegian tradition has the head of the household checking the wheat just before sunset on Christmas Eve; if a lot of sparrows are seen dining, it is supposed to indicate a good year for growing crops.
