Interview #368: Julia Levine

Madison, Wisconsin, USA. q: Introduce yourself: a: My name is Julia Levine and I’m an 18-year-old photographer from Madison, WI. This upcoming year I will be studying photography at Ithaca College in New York. q: In your fashion photography, do you tend to direct the models? What do you do to get them to pose a certain way? a: I usually position the models in the setting I want, with the appropriate background and lighting and whatnot but then I just let them pose freely. Sometimes, if I have a specific concept or emotion in mind I will be more specific in my directions. But usually I want the posing to be as fluid and natural as possible so I stray away from too much instruction.

q: Photographic equipment? a: I work mostly with my digital camera, a Nikon D7000. But I also love working with film, for which I have a Canon F1. q: Upcoming projects or ideas? a: Recently I dropped my iPhone, therefore cracking it’s camera. My first thought was how this would affect the photos. And as it turns out, the results of my attempts at photography on my broken iPhone were actually surprisingly cool. So for my next project, I’m planning on working with cracked lens filters, and possibly working up to experimenting with semi-broken lens and maybe cameras too. I’m thinking it will be based around the concept of destruction as a form of beauty.

q: Any music to recommend? a: Crystal Fighters, The Roots, Alt-J, The Velvet Underground, Tame Impala, Arctic Monkeys, Flume, Dr. Dog, Vetiver, Blue Scholars, St. Vincent the list goes on…
